And do what, go through another decade trying to find a QB in the draft? Fuck that.
That's the issue.
This shouldn't need to be said, but Dak isn't Clint Stoerner. We can quibble over whether he's top 7 or top 15 or whatever, but he's not complete garbage.
So the issue is that most QBs ARE complete garbage. There's like at best 20 good ones at any given time.
If you have even a top 15 - 20 QB, it's really hard to walk away and try to find a better one. The odds are waaaaay stacked against you, even if you have all the cap dollars in the world to spend (a top whatever QB is rarely available) and even if you have a top 10 or even first overall draft pick (the bust rate for even first rounders and first overall QBs is very high).
What good is cap space if your QB is Daniel Jones?
Washington is often brought up in this debate because it's a really good example of a team deciding not to overpay a QB they thought was good not great. And it worked out awful for them. They still don't have a replacement all these years later and they've dipped into free agency, the first round of the draft, and tried the trade market.
You can't just dial up 1-800-QB and find one was always a very apt quote from Parcells. It really is hard to find one that's any good.
I mean, very honestly I'd prefer a better QB but even more so I absolutely don't want to be Washington.
(Of course the other issue is that the "cap problems" the team is pretending to have is self imposed and they could in reality spend way more than they do and keep all of their good players, but I digress.)
