If the NCAA doesn't sort itself out I could see the NFL instituting a rule that if a player signs any sort of NFL contract, and then leaves to return to school, they'll be banned from returning to the NFL.

That only works if college football has some sort of restrictions on years. The way things are going if you can have a 7 year career in college, who cares if you can't go back to the NFL. You can go make millions a year in college.

I think college is still limited to 5 years, if not, enjoy playing in college for 10 years, maybe one day the NCAA will sort itself out.

Maybe, but Goddell is basically a mob boss and can make sure teams have a quiet agreement amongst each other not to resign guys who go back to college.

It is but the influx of dudes that are getting that extended seems to be growing. Chambliss is what, going on to year 6 right now? The NCAA tried to prevent it, he sued and got an injunction. By the time the case is actually heard? The point will be moot by then.

I think that's still somewhat COVID related though since if you go back 5 years he would've started college in 2020 or 2021, which should be out the window in the next year or two.

What if it's not a marginal guy? The precedent applies to all players once set.
Scenario 1: Player goes back to college (a.k.a. the NFL's farm system) after being cut altogether. In this case they may improve to where they're one day better prepared for the NFL anyway
== Net win for the NFL.
Scenario 2: PS player returns to school to get paid more
- any NFL team can sign that player back into the NFL out of college at any time, just like any NFL team could have poached another team's practice-squad player at any time.
== No net difference. If anything, the NFL teams save the weekly pittance they were paying out while maintaining access to the player. It's just slightly less convenient to sign them back when they need them.
Scenario 3: 53 rostered salaried player returns to school to get paid more
- the NFLK rookie minimum is 888k. The typical College NIL for a UDFA/late round fringe guy is $200K–$750K. So the fringe case is not interesting because few would be stupid enough to go back for less money and the NFL team hasn't lost much if any draft capital.
- But suppose Jordan Seaton, who makes $4-6 million from his LSU NIL deal slips to the top of the 2nd round of the draft and is suddenly only slotted to make a "mere" $3.38M-- in this case, why bother staying in the NFL when you could help LSU contend and make much more money exhausting your eligibility while still improving your craft?
== Challenging situation and maybe worth killing the precedent altogether. The moment a team loses its 2nd round pick because of this bullshit we will see sparks fly.
