Not worried about Quinn until I see his defense stop the 49ers from running. If we have to switch up then promote from within. I need to see us stop the run in the playoffs with safeties before I believe in the scheme.
Mcarthy has proved his worth with dak. Can Quinn win when the 49ers and running down our throats? If not he needs to go.

Staley would actually be a decent choice if Whitt heads off with Quinn.
What has he done to deserve a shot? A 1 year DC who got lucky with generational talent that won a Super Bowl and then a shitshow of a defense as a HC.

Yeah he had one year as a defensive coordinator. It was a really stellar year with the Rams but that's not much experience. He did work under Vic Fangio though and I'm a big fan of his.

Ultimately if Quinn leaves though it would be nice to keep someone who will run a similar scheme and try to keep as many of the assistants as possible. I don't really want to throw the whole thing out and sort of start fresh on defense from a coaching and scheme perspective.

I don't think Quinn is going anywhere.

I'd only do it if Whitt leaves, which would leave us with few good options on the current staff.

Really good DC's end up as HC's with shitty defenses all the time, that's exactly what happened with Quinn, and then go back to being good DC's.

Staley doesn't have as much of a track record as I'd like but if Whitt goes we have relatively limited options, Frazier would be my top choice, maybe Patrick Graham if he shakes loose.

Y'all can laugh, but it's too bad he's too old... Otherwise I'd bring back uncle Wade. Heh heh and all that, but he's one of the best DCs who ever lived. He'd have Micah at or breaking the all time single season sack record, and I'm not even kidding.

But I'm with Cotton, I'm not so sure Quinn is leaving anyway.

He got a HC in the spring league (whatever it's called now).

I hate to tell you guys but I think this really is it for Quinn, Seattle is the job he's been waiting on in my opinion.

The last two years I consistently said I thought there was a much better chance of him returning when most thought he was a lock to leave, but I think he's starting to sense that he's maxed out here with some of the same patterns playing out year to year (boom/bust style of play, randomly getting gashed by the run every 4-5 games, etc.). That's not to say I think we'd decline if he stayed, we'd still have a very good defense, but I think he's sensing it's time and Seattle has likely always been his top choice given his familiarity with the front office and ownership.

With all that said, now that McCarthy has really proven himself (in my eyes at least, pending what happens in the playoffs), I don't think Quinn leaving is as much of a concern as it would've been a year or two ago. There are usually strong DC candidates who match Quinn's profile that are available each year, guys like Wilks, Frazier, Gus Bradley and so forth, with several coming next year out of the Saleh/Eberflus/Allen/Bowles group.

Quinn is a great DC and I'd love to keep him, but it's not worth making him HC anymore and there will be others like him available, we just have to hope the organization goes after them when the timing is appropriate.

I agree with that. The question is whether Seattle is set on him. They may not be as much as people think. They might prefer a younger, offensive guy like most other teams.

And if he doesn't get that job, I don't see a lot of market for a 50+ year old white guy, sad as that is to say.

D Ware had his best year under wade.

That's the only hope, that some sort of random McVay situation happens and they get their socks knocked off by Slowik or some such and just can't pass him up.

And I agree, if Seattle goes elsewhere I don't think there are many other strong options for him.

Lots of pass rushers have. He made Bryce Paup (who?) the DPOY, for God's sake.

I know it won't happen, I just had to had to low-key give him his flowers. @geng

The problem with Wade is that his system has a shelf life.

Everywhere he's gone, he makes great defenses but it's for 2 to 3 years tops, then the bottom falls out and his defenses give up yards in chunks and he's cut loose.

Still, we're trying to take advantage of a window that has about 3 years, right? So fuck it....I would make the call and see if he'd be interested.

I know he's got a HC job, but it's for the damn spring league. I gotta believe he'd at least be tempted to get back into the NFL at a much higher paying salary.

He can scheme but as a coach he is too soft and players get undisciplined over time.

No.

Wade is smart in terms of scheme but he's an infectious (in a bad way) personality.

He should never be near this franchise again.

Feh. I think that narrative is way overblown.

After he left here, he only helped Houston win as many playoff games in three years with Matt Freaking Schaub as Garrett did here in nine years, then helped Denver win the Superbowl with a completely finished Manning, then helped the Rams hold Brady to his worst Superbowl performance. He would have won two Superbowls with two different teams in a row as DC if Belichick hadn't completely cleaned McVay and Goff's clocks.

Again, there's no way this would happen at this point. But I wish this were ten years ago so it could.
