It's an interesting move. I think it shows some creativity from the Cowboys front office. It's not the worst move they could make.

Is there anyone else they could have obtained for that fourth round draft choice? Maybe an upgrade at second team G or RB that could have been had for a 4th? That would be my question. I would think Lance would have little, if any, impact this year.

Watched the college highlights from this kid. He has skills, a great arm, throws a really good deep ball, A really good runner. If McCarthy can fix what SF broke, maybe next year he turns into a 2nd or 3rd round pick for us in trade. Who knows. I don't mind this at all.

They could have gotten Josh Jones who would've solidified our OT situation and allowed us to keep Tyler at LG if something happens to one of the tackles.

Well that shows you the value of preseason games.

The Niners actually made their public plan before he got traded.

Syndrome starts and then he comes in.

Again, I am still trying to digest this. This is a departure.

Excellent deal. No way Dak isn’t going to be the starting QB for at least the next two seasons. Why not take a flier on a guy with a lot of natural talent like Lance?

Jones is a case where yeah, they could have done that.

Tackle is going to be an issue, but we always have the capacity to flex Tyler Smith, then all you got to worry about is LG.

His case is interesting because during the draft process, he was hot shit. Then things cooled. Now the Cardinals are dumping him?

No worries.

No doubt.

Yeah he’s been bad in the NFL but this tells you they liked him a lot coming out.

Of course they liked Paxton Lynch too, so….
Who is "they"?

McCarthy and Schottenheimer's kid were not in charge of shit when Lynch was coming out.

Here is the deal.

If Jerry Jones wanted Paxton Lynch, Jason Garrett signed off on this:

Chew on that for a bit.

You can see there is change. We have proof of a Pro Personnel Department not headed by a Garrett taking action. I am not going to get into the big time influence of John Park and his analytics staff.

Things are looking up. Or at the very least...fucking different.

I mean his preseason stats this preseason don't look bad at all. I'll admit I didn't actually watch those games though.

I mean I think everyone is talking about Lance like he was out there doing Richardson things. He wasn't that bad.
I think he was pretty bad against Denver. I posted the highlights.

But he may have had a foot out the door already.

It’s a not quite free but certainly heavily discounted look at a guy that I bet the current admin loved coming out of the draft.

It’s a worthwhile shot in the dark that you can move on from easily if needed.

… why? Why not play Lance?
Because he would have less than 24 hours to learn the playbook. I wish there was enough time but that wouldn't really be fair to the kid. I definitely wish we had him at the beginning of camp as opposed to now.

I do wonder if the Cowboys try to work in the packages for him this year though. His mobility is legit. I could see some Jalen Hurts type mobility with him. Sadly his passing looks more like rookie Hurts than Hurts now. Just looks slow at processing which may never be able to be fixed. You see a lot of that Russel Wilson free Lance in him though.

So watched the Lance plays against the Broncos. He is capable of making some great throws. He had a couple good ones and led the 49ers to the comeback win. He also looks like a really good runner. Not designed stuff but the protection sucked and he was great at scrambling.

Now for the bad. He just never really seemed like he was in a rhythm as a passer. He was constantly scrambling instead of making quick and decisive throws. He can scramble and make some killer throws but it felt like a lot of freelancing. He also threw a pick on a screen that wasn't great. Sometimes as a QB you have to just give up on a screen that is sniffed out. He didn't do that.

Overall his mobility looks pretty stellar and he can make some impressive throws. But he needs work on getting the ball out of his hands quickly and just being decisive with his throws.
Just watched all of his throws from the first two preseason games and my big takeaway is that his pocket presence and footwork is erratic and inconsistent. He's often throwing from off-balance bases because his feet are kind of in conflict on whether he should run or throw for a split second, which is probably what you're saying in terms of decisiveness. His release is also kind of awkward and low, almost a sidearm.

There are some guys who you can just tell by looking at them that the game is moving too quickly and they aren't processing or feeling things quick enough. You can definitely see the talent shine through on some plays but overall he's just inconsistent and raw in maneuvering inside the pocket which leads to most of his breakdowns, although that's expected.

I'm sure the rationale behind the trade is that McCarthy believes he can refine his mechanics and help the talent shine through, which is reasonable to believe since in many ways the guy is effectively a rookie when you look at his path to this point.

Most college QB's attempt about 800-1200 passes in college, this guy threw about 300 or so. He's barely played football since 2019 since NDSU only played one game in the COVID 2020 year, then in 2021 he had a full year as a rookie but obviously didn't play, and then he popped his ACL game 1 of 2022.

He's a bust but in a really different way from a guy like Darnold or Zach Wilson who got plenty of playing time/starts where they were just pure shit and you knew there wasn't much room for improvement. I'm sure if he was forced to play early on he would've looked just as bad, and he's obviously raw as could be, but compared to those guys he was way earlier on in his development curve as a QB given how little he played in college and just never really had much of a chance to develop at the NFL level, so it's almost like a clean slate.

Basically, it's the allure of the unknown.
