Two fastest rushers in the NFL running after you. I like him. Always have. I didn't understand why he isn't right there with a Mafe for example.

He'll probably be able to give us about what we got out of Gregory last year by his 2nd or 3rd season.

Gregory was a really good pass rusher. He won't be easy to replace but I think Sam Williams is going to be a good one. I think we will get way better early returns from him than we did Gregory. Just rare physical skills.

Yea but he also maxed out at 6 sacks in a season, and I feel like Williams could do that as a rookie.

Stats aren't everything but you can't ignore them either.

No question about it. I always thought Gregory had double digit sack potential but injuries and suspensions just always seemed to interrupt him when he was getting there. I think Sam Williams also has double digit sack potential. As a rookie, it's easy. You rotate him with Dorance Armstrong. Let Armstrong do the heavy lifting and then use Williams as the explosive dude off the edge in passing situations.

I'm not entirely sure how Fowler really fits in anymore. I guess occasionally you move Lawrence inside but then you're probably adding Parson's to the pass rush. Fowler just buys you time incase Williams needs a little time to start the season.

You have to delineate between base packages/run downs and nickel/dime packages.

In base packages I think we'll rotate Lawrence/Armstrong/Basham/Golston on the edge, with our DT's on the interior of course. Parsons will primarily play off-ball but move around plenty. Williams probably won't see much if any time, Fowler might rotate as a LEO/4-3 SAM type here and there with Parsons.

In nickel/dime I think Lawrence and Armstrong will rotate both on the edge and on the interior while Parsons/Williams/Fowler rotate more off the edge in space. Guys like Odighizuwa and Gallimore will rotate on the interior too.

Golston and Basham probably won't see much time in nickel/dime unless Golston makes a big jump, and even then it'd probably be on the interior only because he doesn't have much juice off the edge.

So long story short, I think there's plenty of snaps to go around, especially since Williams looks to me like a part-time, pass rush specialist as a rookie.

I like Williams more than Gregory, and I used to like and follow Nebraska. Gregory always had issues and that showed up here. And the Gregory of his first few years wasn't as good as the Gregory of last year, either. I absolutely expect Sam to produce more than Randy over his rookie contract, barring massive injury.

Gregory lacks consistency, always has. Being grandfather’ed into the old drug program he’s a ticking time bomb too.

I just want a guy who’s going to be able to do what he was drafted to do and not tease with otherworldly talent and bend one week and then nothing the rest of the year.

Williams is a straight ahead pass rusher who knows how to get off blocks. He has no pass rush moves, and lacks the arm length and is too stiff to be that guy anyway.

Williams does it with power and motor.

lacks the arm length
Huh? His arms are the same length as Kayvon Thibodeaux...

I will say this, the one thing that Williams may lack is that bendy talent. He turns the corner because of just pure freakish speed and acceleration. But he doesn't exactly get low and dip the shoulder to turn the corner like you see with a David Ojabo for example. Or Gregory when he was here. But a lot of guys don't have that. Travon Walker the top pick in this draft has zero bend. Aidan Hutchinson doesn't either. Thibodeaux does but he also has never had a football season as productive as a pass rusher as Sam Williams just had.

Folks win different ways. Williams isn’t going to be DeMarcus Ware with a million pass rush moves and insane bend. He’s going to do it with aggression, strength, motor, and the ability to come back off a block

I can't help but be excited about this kid and Tolbert. The Smith kid I have a bad feeling about, but these two make me forget about him.

Smith told the media this:

You have to like the kid now.

Gregory was in and out of the lineup so much it stunted his development. So yeah, I could see Williams being able to equal or surpass Gregory's production by year 2 or 3.
