MLB Chatter Thread

I don't want to fully say that I have given up on the season but its hard to be optimistic with the way they are playing. I thought that we would have one more year of division title chasing before the crumble but looks like the team crapped on that idea.
I really don't know what you guys were expecting. You can only out-hit the opposition for so long. Texas only ever seems to take pitching seriously in small doses. They got to the WS with an average rotation and good backend and tried to F with the formula instead of adding to it. That ruined your stud closer and made a bigger mess. They added Yu, but then though they could just get by with one ace. Then they finally realize he isn't an ace and trade for an aging ace.

All the while, you have all these great prospects that do nothing but waste talent in the minors and then have little to no value once they come up like Profar. How about being smart and trading those guys early for legit pitching? That question feels like a broken record when it comes to the Rangers.

Can't say I disagree with any of this.

The Twins had 2,529 feet of HRs last night. 6 bombs, averaging 421.5 feet apiece. Miguel Sano's being the longest at 445.

I want to call you a meanie but this is pretty much the Rangers since they moved to Arlington.

I still expected that offense to carry the team. Starting pitching hasn't really been the problem other than not going deeper into games. The bullpen being the mess it is and the offense failing is what's frustrating.

I feel like they will turn it around at some point, but I saw something similar with Houston last year. The saying is that you can't win the division in April and May, but you can lose it.

That's what I'm oping happens with the Red Sox.

Maybe it's a bit harsh to say they are struggling, but they certainly aren't playing the way they were expected to.

The good news is that the pitching has been very good and almost as good as advertised. I think we'll be ok there. It's the hitting that hasn't been anywhere near as good as last year.

There are too many key players hitting in the .200's. Ortiz couldn't have mattered THAT much, could he?

If the bats wake up, we'll be fine. But I hope we don't fall too far back in the AL East race, so it's key that we win this series vs the Orioles.

Kyle Gibson, the Twins #2 starter just got sent down to AAA. 0-4 with an 8+ ERA will do it.

One month in and the 2 and 5 from our opening day rotation are in the minors. WHEEEE!!

Something I have been saying for a while now......

For the same two minutes every game, Yu Darvish is an awful pitcher

Sam Miller
ESPN.com

In the first inning Saturday night, Angels leadoff man Yunel Escobar dug into the batter's box and stared out at a starting pitcher who has been, in his career, one of the worst in the game. Escobar took a fastball far outside, fouled off a center-cut fastball, then took three more balls. He jogged to first with a walk, and the Angels had a first-inning rally.

Moments later, the No. 2 hitter, Kole Calhoun, dug into the batter's box and stared out at a starting pitcher who has been, in his career, one of the game's very best. Same guy, actually, but if you believe the statistical record, those few seconds made all the difference in the world. Yu Darvish got Calhoun to fly out. Then he struck out Mike Trout for the first of 10 K's in six innings of mostly dominant pitching. Darvish and the Rangers won.

It's often said of aces that you have to get to them early. In one of the odder statistical quirks going, Darvish has exaggerated that cliché nearly beyond belief. Since he debuted in 2012, he owns the seventh-best ERA+ in baseball, better than that of David Price and Madison Bumgarner and Corey Kluber and Stephen Strasburg and Jon Lester. Only one starter in history -- Jose Fernandez -- struck out batters more frequently over a career. Darvish has made the All-Star team every season that he has been healthy. He's a bona fide ace.

But for about two minutes every night that he starts, Darvish gets lit up. No pitcher in baseball has been worse to start games, relative to the rest of his pitching, than Darvish. He allows an OPS almost 270 points higher to the first batter of the game than to everybody else. Here's how his pitching compares to the rest of his body of work:

I'm watching MLB highlights on Quick Pitch and they mention that Joe Mauer had his first walk off HR of his 14 year career.

14 years? Holy crap time flies.

Seems like only yesterday Boberts was wishing ill-will on him for snubbing Florida St.

The Twins are 13-3 when the top 3 in their rotation are pitching. 3-11 when anybody else does.

I think I see where they might need some improvement.

Today is the one year anniversary of this. Please enjoy again with me...

So the Astros are on pace for 113 wins. Dallas Keuchel is back to playing at a Cy Young level. Back to back games with grand slams, then the next night, George Springer takes the day off and his replacement hits two homers.

Not too bad.

Yeah, you guys are smoking hot right now. Figures you would light fire the same time we start to actually win some games.

Fuck the Marlins.

Oh yeah? Well if the season started 8 days ago we would be on a pace for 162 wins.

This Astros team has been in the making for a while so this is definitely not a big surprise. Well, maybe this kind of a win/loss record is a bit of a surprise because it is ridiculous right now. Reminds me of the Cubs last year.

The question I had was if they were going to have the starting pitching to make the leap to the next level. I was not a big believer in Keuchel getting back to his 2014/15 level but so far that has been the case and that is huge for the Astros. I did think this was going to be a big breakout year for McCullers (and made it a point to get him in my FBB league) but you always have to worry about him hitting the DL. As long as he is out there pitching though he is one of the better young starters in the league. I have no doubt they'll make a trade for a big time starter before the deadline as well.

The offense was never a question. Very good with a lot a youth and players in the peak of their careers.

Bottom line, they have a legit shot to win it all this year as long as they can avoid too much bad luck on the injury front.

Let's not get crazy here.

Don't believe it?

I along with the Rangers have had a resurgance. Not giving up (again) despite the odds.
