MLB Chatter Thread

It's basically just a slider. Not like pitchers haven't always thrown them at different speeds.

What I think is stupid is all the young social media baseball fans pick up and promote this stuff because they think it makes them sound like real baseball people on the cutting edge. I saw this firsthand on other topics when I was really following the Rangers closely on 2009-11 or so, but we see it in football and other areas too.

It definitely is an analytics darling right now, that's true.

I remember a time when you threw a fastball, breaking ball and changeup. Now, there are 45 words to describe the same damn pitch. :lol
For instance - and to further answer Geng - on the Rangers telecast, they now instantly put what type of pitch it was in addition to the speed. And they don't even use slider anymore, but sweeper. So they just replaced one term that's been around forever with a new trendy one.

Is it the end of the world, of course not, but one of the great things about baseball is the tradition and how things stay stable through generations. That's why I'm not a fan of "sweeper" . Rant over (maybe).

All these names are dumb. A cutter used to just be called a cut fastball. The term I haven't heard in a while and I miss it is screwball.

Tonight at 6 Central Italy/Venezuela. Anyone watching?
