Cowboys Trade for Joe Milton

There was a decent chance we were going to use a 5th or earlier on a QB. I don't think this is an awesome deal or anything but this isn't worse than using a 5th in this year's draft for a QB, especially if Milton is a better prospect than who they might have drafted (plus we didn't actually lose a pick in the draft we essentially traded down).

Milton is big and has a cannon. I'll give him that. Physically he has tools. He is also 25 and played in a simplistic offense in college. He can throw a pretty deep ball though.

Then sign a vet instead of throwing away a pick on a maybe?

Trading down moreso than losing a pick altogether.

Brissett got 6 million a year, Lock got 5 million. Rush got 3 million.

What you're referring to is a bigger problem. Yes they should spend more on the team generally and it obviously hurts their ability to compete that they don't.

But within the parameters that they insist on operating, I'm not sure it makes sense to spend 3-6 million on a backup QB when they will hardly spend that on a starting RB or WR.

Milton showed more in one game as a rookie than Grier has in what, 7 years in the league?

Grier had a great preseason with us.

But yeah, not trying to pump either guy up. I'd rather tank if Dak goes down for any period of time. Winning enough games to pick 12th is stupid. Should have played Lance for example.

I will say I would rather have Milton as my backup than an over priced older backup. At least with a younger guy you can have him for a few years cheap, you have potential for upside if he ever develops and if he outright sucks who cares, you get the higher pick without Dak. The veteran backups always seem kind of pointless to me. Hooray you've got a guy who can win a game or two but in the end still suck if you have a meaningful game.

Absolutely. Would a Flacco, Keenum, Lock or any of the other slobs out there move the needle?

At least with Milton you have some high end traits. It did not work with Lance, but it might with him.

But that precious, precious fifth.

This is not a bad trade.
I am not mad at this any more than I was mad at the Trey Lance trade.

The whole issue is what we do with the player. How does this staff develop him?

It certainly appears that Fat Mike did not give a full development commitment to Lance. Even if he did quietly and it did not work out, it is what it is.

Perhaps this staff will be more aggressive with his utility and get him on the field all of preseason to get a good look.

Yeah I just hate giving up the fifth. And I know we got back a seventh. But a fifth just feels so much better than a seventh. Granted it's like 40 picks between the two.

As far as Milton is concerned Big, strong armed and athletic. Probably has one of the strongest arms in the NFL. His problem is being erratic with all that arm strength. But that's my opinion from college. I didn't watch the one game he played last year or his preseason games. Maybe he has developed some since college. Ultimately I'm good with this type of backup. I just hate giving up the fifth for him.

At least there isn't some limited veteran backup like Cooper Rush. If Dak gets hurt, Milton plays. Milton didn't have a ton of playing time in college either. Played a little at Michigan and then basically was a one year starter for the Vols.

We gave up another potential Seat Belt, Asim Richards, Matt Waletzko, Simi Fehoko, Bradlee Anae, Mike White, Joe Jackson, Ryan Russell, Ben Gardner or Joe Randle.

The best pick in the 5th in the last decade from this braintrust was CB Michael Jackson who we cut or Dalton Schultz.

Given our new offensive staff, I would think they could come up with ways to use his mobility and not just in a panic after he gets to play after Prescott gets hurt.

Bland would like to say FU.

Scandrick is outside of the decade, which feels weird to say. Hard to believe he was 2008.

The chances that we get another Bland and avoid some of the other types is pretty damn remote.

Well yeah, if I knew we were giving up a probowl corner I'd just trade all of my picks to secure the entire fifth round of the draft.

I like the fifth round, I think there is plenty of talent there. But it's not some magical round. It's not like, hey I love seventh rounders because Jay Ratliff was a seventh rounder. I just think in this particular draft there will be really good D-lineman and RBs still sitting there in the fifth round. Probably not WR. Probably not corner. Probably not O-line. Maybe a TE. I doubt any decent LBers left.

Just sort of how this draft shakes out. The depth is all at RB and D-line. But I guess you only have so much room on the roster for those positions.
