Remember a couple of years ago when the team traded Amari Cooper for a lowly 5th round pick and instead re-signed Michael Gallup? And most fans immediately knew it was a ridiculously dumb decision? And now we're still dealing with the negative ramifications?

Good times.
Right. It seems you could install one of the guys here making the decisions football-wise and they'd do better. The rest of the league just sniffs out what we want to do. They knew Jerry hated Cooper for whatever reason and they took advantage.

Yeah, no one is trading for that contract.

Hell it sucks for us because we only save $800,000 if we outright cut him. We save more if it's designated a June 1, but then leave a bunch of dead cap under the tree for 2025.

Yeah you just moved Martin's money to a future year. So what you need to do is take some money off those books in the future. Gallup does that for us.

Depending on what they are willing to spend this year in the ALL IN year, it might be best to just absorb all of the cap hit this year and be done with his cap hit for good.

Random thought:

I would like another impact pass rusher

The Chargers will probably trade or (most likely) release Mack or Bosa or both.

I would like one, please.

From Walker’s sugarcoated article:

The topic of a potential trade was indeed broached during the 2023 regular season, but it was ultimately tabled until the offseason, where it's now again being revisited, and with traction.

Please. We were going to trade him last year before the trade deadline? And now he is more marketable because of what? It must be tough to write utter bullshit so the idiotic fans have something positive to cling to.

Teams seem to think they might. The fact that both have roster bonuses probably backs them into a corner.

Yeah, I don't know what their plan was in signing both.

They'd have a shot at a Superbowl somewhere in the small window of early years where Herbert's new deal isn't sucking away too much of the cap and in anticipation of a major cap increase?

Well looking at it, that window was 2023, a year Herbert and Bosa unfortunately spent a lot of on IR.
Bosa: $15,776,666
Mack: $16,632,500
Herbert: $8,458,176

Because in 2024 you have
29 year old Bosa: $36,611,666
33 year old Mack: $38,517,500
32 year old Keenan Allen $34,717,500
30 year old Mike Williams $32,460,000
Herbert: $19,345,675
... and no guarantees of health.

IMO you pocket 8 million in cap savings by cutting Mack, stick with Bosa's deal in 2024 and cut him in 2025 (when Herbert's cap number hits $37,345,675) while trying to develop new pass rushers and WRs .

Yeah, who broached the idea? The DC.com podcast crew, who decided that would be unwise because "MG" was about to break out to his pre injury greatness?

Depends on the money.

If he got 8/year or less, solid deal that I would've liked him back on, if he's up around 10/year or more, good riddance and thanks for the comp pick.

He's a really good role player and complementary edge rusher, not a guy you want starting and playing 50 snaps a game.

I heard an explanation of why the cap doesn't exist. You can get players, and with the way the cap is growing by huge leaps each year now, you can just keep kicking the can down the road, cuz the can may have started the size of a football, but years later with big cap growth, it could be the size of a thimble.

Thoughts?
Look no further than the KC Chiefs and the monster deal they gave Jones. That on top of the monster deal they gave Mahomes.
Yeah, they’ll probably need to skimp somewhere at a position or two- maybe - but they will be in another title game or the SB again at a minimum the next 2 years. Cap be damned.

Jerry cheaps out by signing FA castoffs because he is scared of the cap, overpays a mediocre QB, sits around and tells everyone how close the Cowboys are, and talks a big game about FA after the season…but yet still never gets to the title game.
