There is a big difference in thinking that he is a younger Hankins versus something more, which is exactly as he is being painted into being.

As a rookie I think a younger Hankins is reasonable, his pass rush is going to need a bit of development but I expect him to be something along the lines of Dontari Poe by year 2/3.

But the initial conversation was about this year and I don't think we need him to be a borderline Pro Bowler for this unit to be dominant, potentially even historic.

They could be one of the top 25 defenses of the past 50 years, I think.

It would be wonderful if they were as good as the 2000 Ravens. Only the '85 Bears were better, IMO.

2000 Ravens is lofty, I was just throwing them out as an example of recent "generational" type defenses. I could see them being something along the lines of the 2015 Broncos or early 2010's Seahawks.

He better be more than Hankins, even a young one.

I think it's more a point that he could be Hankins as a rookie. Certainly no one is hoping for Hankins level forever. But just being a badass run defender as a rookie with Hankins still on the roster would be a big help. And then hopefully over time he becomes more of a complete package.

Putting any of the Seahawk and especially Ravens defenses ruined your point to begin with.

Ravens I agree, that was more to point out how there are usually 2-3 of those defenses each decade who can carry a team to a Super Bowl and stand out amongst their peers.

But I definitely think they could be 2012-15 Seahawks level.

Whoa, slow that roll.

I realize you are all Team Mazi Smith, but unless he is the real deal and legitimate right off the bat, this ain't happening.

I don't think he is. He could be. But you don't go from doing what he did at Michigan to doing what they think he is capable of doing overnight.

Yeah I agree. All timer defense is a bridge too far.

I think most likely they will be as good as or slightly better than last year. Maybe the biggest thing will be being more consistently good rather than the couple lulls they had last year (which granted was due to injury, but depth matters too).

If they are simply as good as they were in the playoffs last year, it will be good enough. Then it will be on the offense to pull its weight.

We get the run defense fixed and I agree that this defense could be an all-timer. Hopefully, Mazi pans out.

They should be better than last year. If for no other reason than we are just better at corner and DT (for a full season). We have a ton of you in guys like Clark and Williams who could step up as well.

All-timer defenses have 2-3 HOF level guys usually at different levels of the defense.

Health permitting, we likely have 1.

So, yeah, unless some players take massive leaps, no all-timer D in 2023.

But it can definitely be good enough to take us deep into the playoffs— health permitting again.

Sore spot on the defense right now is LVE's back up.

I was gonna put this in the Sam Williams thread but we don’t have one. :(
