So the Giants see that their defense needs fixing, and they go out and make significant signings that drastically improves the unit.

This year, it was the offense that sputtered so what do they do? They sign a playmaker like Marshall.

Meanwhile, we are going on multiple season of thinking Marinelli is some genius who can turn chicken shit into chicken salad.

FA is not a good way to build a team. Also, I'd be much more concerned if they signed a good RB or TE or OL.

That might not be as bad as it looks. How long did he sign for? They have a shitload of cap room this year. If they frontloaded the contract, he might be cheap his last couple years. Frontloading it will also help them get above the cap floor this year, if they are still conserving cap space. Might be, if they're waiting to throw it all at a mega contract for a QB.

Thought I had saw it was for 2years but can't find any report on contract length now so I guess I was thinking of Marshall's contract. Either way I would rather have Marshall at 2yrs for 4mil cheaper than Garcon's first year

It's been awhile and I can't remember shit, but I thought that's what Dallas got in trouble for with Miles Austin's contract in the uncapped year.

It's not the same. That was an uncapped year, and Dallas tried to dump a big salary even though there was a supposed "wink wink" agreement not to. Which was a load of bullshit, but whatever.

The 49ers are 98.6 mil under the cap right now. They could in theory pay Garcon 98 million this year and still be under. And it would be legal as they would still be under the cap.

Technically what we did was totally legal under the cap rules at the time. So clearly the NFL doesn't give a shit about that.

But yeah the NFL wouldn't have a problem with that. The way the cap carries over from year to year it doesn't really matter. The 49ers just need to do it to get over that cash threshold.
