2026 Random Cowboys Stuff Thread...

I've been thinking McCoy is probably a long shot with how they were all talking about taking guys available now who aren't coming off injuries.

One random FA name that I found interesting mentioned in the article was Dremont Jones, I'd love that signing.

Yeah, would make for a really good option to add to the Dline. I know that it's not a big position need on defense but he has always been a player I like.

I don't mind taking a shot, but under no circumstances whatsoever should we come even remotely close to offering them a 1st round pick.

It would be different if he were 25, but he's not.

I'd give up our 2027 2nd or a 3rd and 5th. The guy is a legit stud and he's got at least 3 years left at an elite level and 3 years, give or take, is what I think our Dak window consists of, so I'm willing to go all in for that.

With that being said, a 1st rounder is just too much for a guy that age because if we play our cards right with our team building this year and next, we should still have a fairly young and still very talented team that can make the transition to a new QB a pretty smooth one 3 or 4 years from now, ala the way things worked out from Romo to Dak.

But if you give too many assets away, then you lose that privilege and I don't want to do that.

Now, I would do that in a heartbeat, but they are going to want much more than that. And, I'm not willing go any more.

Don't, Jerry. Just don't. We have limited draft resources as it is. Do not give up more.
Jerry is 83 and his QB is getting older, so he might be in "win now" mode.
:doh

Which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Again, we've got a 3 year window before Dak declines. And we've been far too passive for over a decade now in regards to making the team better, especially when coming off seasons where we produced some good teams.

So it would be great if we finally got aggressive and made the kind of moves that show that we're going for it.

The key is to not lose too many future assets in the process.

But as far as money goes? IDGAF.... Spend that shit. The salary cap is not a true limitation and you can manipulate it if you know what you're doing. So I say spend away if it means you can acquire legit elite playmakers.

Yeah, I'd be okay with Crosby if only because you'd pretty clearly defining that Dak window.

Problem is, I'm not sure Jerry even sees a Dak Window. Good chance he expects Dak to play great until he's 40.

I don't think we should pay Jaelan Phillips 20/year but I want good players added outside of the draft and if they end up doing something like that, so be it.

I'd be absolutely shocked if they did though.

Dean or Blankenship for 8/year?

Sure, but they aren't signing anybody for 20/year.

Yeah the pass rusher market is always brutal in free agency at the top. I don't think Jaelan Phillips is a good enough player to throw 20 mil a year at for example.

But I hope we play in that sort of second tier market instead of holding out for the third or fourth tier. Like guys like Chenal, Dean, Walker shouldn't be 20 mil a year at LBer. The only guy who may be that 20 mil mark at LBer is Devin Lloyd. And yeah, I'm not going there.

I really don't think we will play much in the corner market. I think Dallas really does view Revel and Bland as their outside corners. And we can all disagree with making Revel a starter without more NFL level proof but I think they will. What they will focus more on is safety and maybe nickel.

I think safety may be another sweet spot for Dallas in free agency. Less expensive position and we may be looking at a couple of guys there. We may be looking for a safety in the draft who is athletic enough to also play the nickel. They will probably want two safeties this season. One like I just mentioned and then probably a free agent who is more of a pure safety. That's where you get in the Jalen Thompson, Minkah Fitzpatrick (Not a free agent yet) and Blankenship type players.

I'd like to see a pass rusher added but I just don't know that we will open the check book even for a Mafe or Oweh type player. I think those guys are going to get paid. If they aren't in that 20 mil range, I'm game for signing either.

It's interesting thinking back on how the defense warped the view of the offense.

The Minnesota game was a really good example. Minnesota's defense was maybe the best in the league over the last month or so of the season, but against us we put up over 400 yards (season high against them) and had 17 points at halftime and 23 at the end of the 3rd quarter despite two missed Aubrey FG's (both 50+ to be fair, but still).

The offense definitely settled for too many FG's but you could argue that our offense put up one of the best 2-3 performances of the year against the Vikings, but because our defense was so god damn horrible (gave up points on 6 of the Vikings last 7 drives) you lose sight of how well they played most of the year.

They definitely had a few clunkers but for the most part they really played well against several of the best defenses in the league (Eagles, Chiefs, Chargers, Vikings, Packers) but no offense can consistently keep up with a defense giving up points on almost every single drive.

If we can improve toward the middle of the pack next season, I’ll feel pretty good
