Extending Pickens

The only reason to swap Pickens for a rookie first round pick (if all you get in return for Pickens is a first) is to be cheaper at WR. Otherwise you're ultimately getting worse at WR next season. No one is going to give you what Pickens did last year as a rookie. There is no Randy Moss in this draft.
That money is a pretty big factor, though. (And it's not like Pickens himself is Randy Moss, either.)

I actually would prefer to keep him, I think he's more valuable to us than 1 first.

But even if we trade him for a first we won that trade.
I agree with you … a new wide receiver come in fresh out of college compared to somebody’s had a few more years in a league. I think you would take that NFL experience over a newbie coming out of the college ranks.

No but my point with Moss was that he dominated right away as a rookie. I think there could be some really good rookie WRs in this class. I just doubt they will play at Pickens level from day one as a rookie. Which means in 2026 you're worse at WR if you let Pickens leave. That doesn't mean you can't find a really good rookie receiver capable of giving you like 1000 yards.

So again, that's why you have to get more in free agency with the extra money. Otherwise you're getting worse next year.

Trading Pickens and not doing anything in FA is not something a team serious about winning does.

Trading Pickens, drafting his replacement high and signing 2-3 high level starters on defense with the money you saved would be something a team really trying to win does.

Any time a plan involves this team actually going after high end free agents, I immediately think the plan is unrealistic. Which is probably why I'd rather just pay Pickens.

That's where I'm at, plus I think as long as Dak is healthy we'll get borderline MVP play from him as long as we have a duo as dynamic as Lamb and Pickens.

That's a lot to throw away for "financial flexibility".

Well and the thing is I also don't trust that this team won't swing and wiff on 3 Dante Fowler types as opposed to getting one real impact defensive player. The free agent class isn't that great in the first place. If you're taking an elite guy off your offense you need to be using the money for an elite defensive player. Not a bunch of 1 year deals talking about how you got 3 players for the cost of 1.

No surprise here.
