It took me a while to accept that Emmitt Smith was better for the Cowboys than Herschel Walker was. Herschel was so dynamic, but people consistently failed to use him properly.
I know if Norv had Herschel, he'd have been better but even Norv failed to use our backs more as receivers. I can only imagine what an accurate passer like Troy could do with prime Herschel.
But Emmitt was a lot more patient runner and relied more on balance, patience, and vision compared with the insane combo of speed and power Walker brought. I think this was essential for our OL, which was semi-awful before Emmitt arrived. Who knew all they needed was a patient runner.
The ideal place for Walker would have been with Bill Walsh, who really wanted him. At least there they would throw to him more, and Walker was crazy dangerous as a receiving option.
We never believed in that and it fricking stumps me why not. I think there was one game vs the Rams in the early 90's where we threw a lot to Emmitt by design and he tore them to shreds. Of course, we NEVER DID IT AGAIN.
Same thing when Herschel returned to Dallas in 1996-- Troy threw a perfect pass to him that traveled 20 yards in a blink-- and (of course) we NEVER DID IT AGAIN.
