We talked about it last night, but I don't see how Bob says that with such certainty. Looks to me like the receiver is on the line. If he's off, it's barely. The h-back on the other side is much farther off in the proper position.

Like I was saying...

If I had to guess the ref was trying to keep the game close. The penalty just doesn't exist. Tripping penalties are usually pretty blatant. And it was the defender trying to trip in this situation. How you can call the offensive player for what the defensive player clearly did blows my mind. But in that situation the ref wants to push us back 15 yards. That run was a game ender in my opinion. You push us back and suddenly field goal range and everything else becomes questionable. I think it absolutely was an intentional thing to try to keep the game "competitive" to the last second.

And I'm not going to feel sorry for Detroit who had 3 shots at the 2 point conversion and couldn't get any of them right. Dan Campbell should take heat for that but he won't.

I agree, he is through the OTs waist which to me has always been how its decided.

Yeah, I think if you look at it, this team isn't even that talented. CeeDee and Micah are awesome, Tyler Smith is great, but where else are we so exceptional?

OL, no... Too beat up and getting old.
DL... Other than Micah, not at all.
RBs... Please.
WRs... Many other teams have much better depth.
LBs.. A joke.
DBs... Good, better than most but not some super group.
QB... Dak is probably top 5-6 or so.

No team plays to 100% of its potential, of course. But I'm not sure we aren't that far off . With especially Martin and Steele falling way off and injuries at LB and missing Diggs, I don't see that we're that talented compared to other contenders.
Agreed....
I think the bar has been lowered significantly as to what defines a "contender". I tend to have the older mindset when I think of this term. I still think of a team loaded with talent that doesn't lose to inferior teams more than once a season, plays well on the road, always finds a way to win when they're not playing well on a given day, amps it up in December as playoff time gets near.
I'm not sure those teams really exist anymore. Maybe the Pats, Steelers, Ravens, Colts, Saints from a few years ago. These teams also had HOF QB and/or dominating or all-time level defenses.

Also, why anyone plays prevent defense unless you have a 3 TD lead is beyond me.

The defense played well all game. You no longer have to worry about the run and you picked the ball off last drive with that aggressiveness. So why not go full on 10 yards off the ball prevent. Makes zero sense to me. Quinn lost his balls somewhere.

The last thing this sport needs is more policing of tackling.

I hate those tackles. It's funny, I was taught my whole life playing football to keep my feet and run through the tackle. At some point someone clearly realized that teaching tackling like this was more efficient. But I also have no idea how to police it. We already have so many rules and flags. I just don't see how you can fix it. But much like Roy Williams with the horse collar it is a very dangerous form of tackling.

I very much disagree. I think you are selling our talent pretty short here. We are legitimately 11-5 and have as much (or more) talent as anyone in the league outside of SF.

This has to be one of, if not the worst, officiated games of the year.

The tripping on Hutch that was called on our TE should be a fireable offense.
Funny thing is that until the last two minutes or so I had commented to my son that the officiating was sparse but they were calling it the same on both teams so I wouldn’t complain. Then They went inept in the last two minutes.

That's fine. I'm not saying we suck. I'm just saying the team isn't as talented as it has been... Mostly with our OL falling way off due to age and injury, and the DL the same as it's been for years now - not adding anything - but older. LB is beat up, Diggs is gone, and our skill positions are just okay other than CeeDee.

I think SF is not just ahead of us, but far ahead of us.

A big part of the talent differential with SF is their willingness to fill holes by grabbing players as FAs, off waivers, or in trades. Jerry and the Idiot Son sit on their hands and do nothing when opportunities come along.

Edit: Oh, unless you count making the big move for Trey Lance. That was a masterstroke.

See but I think this is selling it short. Every team is dealing with issues like this or worse. I also wouldn't just hand wave away having Lamb - he's a significant talent. We didn't have much at WR in the 90s other than Irvin but that's a huge "other than".

What team (other than maybe SF depending on where you rate Purdy) can say that they have a top 5ish talent at: QB, WR, LT, and Edge?

Sure we have our issues but they're not crippling. Look at the eagles for example who have a very limited QB and one of the worst back 7s in the league.
