Can someone tell me why non-exclusive tagging Dak is a bad idea? Not being sarcastic, just wondering why that isn’t something that has been talked about more.

You don't want a team with 2 late first round picks to sign Dak to a contract that's hard for the Cowboys to match.

Yes that is a legitimate concern because there are GMS out there who are desperate for a QB and would pay a premium for a positive potential QB and that is what DAk is currently. They would be crazy but they would do it.

You wouldn't want two 1st rounders for Dak Prescott?

Maybe but it would need to be low numbered picks in order to parlay that into a high rated QB. Because it means that the team has just become a probable rebuilding status team.

No. Good QBs are really, really hard to find. I know what I have is good enough. I'd rather not roll the dice in the draft and risk drafting the next Trubisky/Allen/Rosen/Winston etc.

There are a zillion and a half 1st round QB draft busts. It's better to just pay if you already have a good one and do your god damn job as a front office surrounding what you have with enough talent.

Two first in the late first? Hell no.

I'd love to have two extra first round picks, don't get me wrong but no I'm not trading a top ten QB for picks in the Taco Charleton range of the draft.

If you're trading Dak, you have to get at least a first that gives you a decent chance at a franchise QB.

So don’t sign Dak for $35M, hope Dak signs for >$30M or hope some team will trade for a Tier 2 QB with Tier 1 value.

Those are our options.

Two first rounders for the defense this year, we suck and get Top 10 pick next year for the franchise QB.

That’s a better shot than asking Dak Prescott to elevate his play and teammates to a SB.

The 49ers took 4 years of 1st rounders to build this SB team.

The one thing that won’t happen is Dak signing for Tier 2 QB money.

I generally agree but to me aside from the injuries I think Tua is a generally very safe prospect and could very easily end up being a better QB than Dak. So we'd basically be gambling on the risk of Tua's health vs. the risk of overpaying Dak.

If we couldn't get a prospect like Tua out of this I wouldn't do it, and if it turns out that Tua is gone at 3 then I'd turn down 5+18 because I wouldn't want to gamble on a guy like Herbert or Love. Now, if the long term strategy is to tank for Lawrence, then maybe, but that's obviously not happening.

So it basically boils down to whether you want to take the risk on Tua's health+18 vs. the risk of overpaying Dak.

I don't think it's clear cut either way but if you guaranteed me Tua was there at 5 and if Dak is truly paying hardball and asking for 38+, I'm taking Tua+18.

Yeah I'm with you on Tua but his injuries scare me to death. Hips are often a reoccurring problem. Meaning his hip could do this again because structuraly the issue is the still there.

I want nothing to do with Tua. Especially if it costs us Dak. No thanks.

What's tier two money in your opinion? Because Wentz and Goff are tier two QBs and they got 32-33 mil per year.
Good question...If we're having heartache over $35M, that's definitely Tier 1 money. With a $188M salary cap and going down to $3M to $32M, that's only a 2% difference in the salary cap. I'd consider $32M still to be Tier 1 money.

I'd say Tier 2 is ~$28M where Garrapolo and Cousins are.

I don't think of it that way. Tier 1 money to me is what would an elite QB get on the open market today. That's Patrick Mahomes and the 40 mil we are all hearing.

So to me tier 2 money is what would a tier 2 QB get on the open market. The most recent examples are Goff and Wentz. Both are a year old so I think legit tier 2 money is in that 34 mil a year range.

At this point anything under 30 mil is for a QB that you don't really feel that good about. Probably someone outside the best 15 QBs in the NFL.

How many teams with late round selections are looking for a Dak, anyway? The parties interested would be higher in the order, because they desperate for talent

This defense isn’t one player away. We need good players all over. Cupboard is closed to bare.
