It also puts a bit of pressure on Dak to not try to squeeze every last cent out of an extension.
Sorry I just don't see how this puts pressure on Dak. Trey Lance doesn't have any real pedigree and is a 3rd string QB on most teams in the league.

speaking of which, Lance is balding badly. I want a qb who can face the day with confidence.
Perhaps that is it. Look at Shanahan’s kid.

Bald.

Look at Darnold’s impressive Syndrome mane.

I wonder if they plan on him being 3rd string. A 4th is a lot to give up for a 3rd stringer.

If they're serious about contending this season, they don't force him into the #2 slot.

Cooper Rush is proven and knows the system inside and out. They've proven they can win with him.

Lance on the other hand is still an enigma.

One who is athletic and has a cannon arm and is 6'4" is not ever going to be available in the fourth round. I wonder of McCarthy has visions of Brett Farve being traded to the Packers.
This is the crux of the trade in my opinion. Even though Lance never should've gone top 5-10, he was a legit first round prospect. We aren't getting those kinds of tools outside of the first 2ish rounds, and maybe not even outside the first.

I'd much rather gamble on something like this than taking a Will Levis towards the end of the first.

I would be shocked if they do that.

Had we traded for, say, Akili Smith after he flamed out in Cincinnati, you could say all the same things we're trying to justify the Lance trade with now. First rounder, physical traits, all the tools, maybe they can fix him, etc.

These flyers on 1st round QB busts very rarely work out. Teams don't give up on those guys lightly.
