He didn't. Shortly after he was drafted he called in to the fan and was pretty excited to be bringing #10 to Dallas next season. It's cool when you're like years removed from the last legendary WR but Dez was on the team 3 years ago, it seems too soon, plus Lamb seemingly didn't really want it.
I'd have just let him roll with whatever he wanted but it's whatever.
Then they asked Jerry post draft conference and he made it known that he was going to wear #88 because "tradition" and also to honor his old Arkansas friend who died this year and shared the same last.
This is what was said when Jerry was talking to RJ Ochoa of Blogging the Boys:
“When we were, this is a little drama from our perspective, when we were all sitting there and had said our piece, and then we said, ‘okay, what’s it going to be?’ I said in honor of my great friend that just passed this year we’re going to have his namesake come on here and wear old number 88. Just like Michael and Dez and those guys, and we’ve got us a wide receiver. And let me tell you one thing if he’s got the competes and heart of that Jerry Lamb he’ll be bad to the bone.”
Sadly, it's just pretty damn petty on Jerry's end and pretty low to guilt someone into taking a number they don't want.
At one point #88 truly meant something but it's given out far too frequently since Irvin retired that any significant meaning it once had is worn out now.
