This team rarely intercepts passes going back a lot of years.

I wonder if Byron is the best CB in the league, but just plays for a team that never intercepts the ball.
The CBs would have to have eyes in the back of their head to intercept passes for the Dallas Cowboys.

Seems like they're only trained to watch the WRs hands and eyes, throw their hands up at the last possible minute, and hope for the best.

I think the "consistently good in coverage" aspect is overrated.

He is not Deion Sanders. He does not blanket WRs and then make plays when they present themselves.

That is the difference. If I am paying $18M, he better erase a guy and make plays.

Gilmore is a classic example. He is an elite corner. 6 INTs and two TDs in 2019. Averages 3 INTs a season over his career.

Jones? Not in the same league.
Totally agree...let this guy walk and disappoint somewhere else. After the play Rodgers/Cook made on him in the playoffs he can F off.

I have thought about that. But I don't want them to pay 18M just to find out.

It's funny the guy was a mediocre safety a couple years ago. Now he is an elite corner in free agency. I'm not saying he won't pick off more balls in a different scheme but that doesn't change who he is.

Coaching makes all the difference in the world. How many times have we watched guys leave here and flourish elsewhere. Or guys that played well on another team, only to come here and fall into the same rut as our other players. That is not a coincidence.

Thank God the horseshit we were stuck with for so long is finally gone and we have some real NFL coaches again.

I don't disagree but Byron has never been a corner who picks balls off. Not in college, not at safety and not at corner. I'm not saying he couldn't pick a couple balls off with different coaching or scheme but I don't think you'll change what he fundamentally is as a player.

I think there is also a part of me that worries he is a bit of a scheme specific corner. He is really good as a cover 3 guy but I don't know if that really fits everyone else in our secondary. But that may just be silly on my part.

Even if I knew for sure he was going to turn into the 2nd coming of Deion Sanders, I wouldn't want to give him $18 mill.

This is part of the technique that’s being coached, how to defend the ball while your eyes are on the receiver.

It‘s part of a strategy to prevent big plays, with the obvious trade off being interceptions. With this strategy in place you can in theory spend every dime of major contracts in offense, hoping to outscore and pull away from your opponent.

Paid the price for a Mercedes and got a Honda.
And in Dak’s case, we have a Honda, slapped a Mercedes badge on it, and want to pay for a Ferrari.

I am making this a Cowboys Free Agency thread, and we can use the cuts and signing thread for the rest of the league.

You mean waiting on the CBA?
Yes.

A. We knew or should have known the CBA proposal was coming.

B. We could have signed any of these players a year ago and planned ahead.

C. Is the new CBA going to make that much difference in what these contracts will look like?

No other team seems to be taking this same stance that I've seen.

I agree. And Jerry Jones should know the parameters better than anyone being inside negotiations. And once the agents see that new CBA, guess who's asking price goes through the roof too?

Yeah, it's not like Dak is going to see the new CBA and suddenly lower his asking price. His asking price either isn't going to change or it's going to go up. So why wait for the new CBA other than to procrastinate. But this seems to always be our negotiation tactic, wait until the very last second and then try to hammer something out. That or get someone locked up years in advance hoping for a team friendly deal.

And yet the Jones boys fancy themselves as shrewd negotiators. While they take it up the ass from player after player on the table.

Waiting is exactly what Todd France has wanted to do.

The Eagles and Rams got ahead of things while their quarterbacks still had years remaining in their deals. The Joneses are about to pay the price for having Dak cheap for four years - and then some.

I'm actually starting to get to the point where I say duck it, either Dak plays on the tag or he doesn't play at all. But I'm not giving him in excess of $35 million a year and putting my team at a disadvantage vs the entire rest of the league because he's next in line and I waited too long.

I'm worried we're going to see a market-setting deal for a quarterback who hasn't won anything followed by a Jones family sales job after what a great thing it is.
