The catch itself didn't end the game. Drew Pearson was brought down by the back of his jersey. Otherwise he may have scored the winning TD. A few plays later, Danny White has the ball stripped from him, Niners recover, game is sealed.
Staubach had retired a couple of years earlier. This was Dallas' last real shot at a title with a lot of the older school players still on the team. They pretty much nose dived until Jimmy came along and rebuilt.

I don't think I agree.

We made the NFC championship game the very next year (couldn't really handle Riggins that game, plus Danny White got hurt in the game) and made the playoffs following a 12-4 season the year after that (couldn't handle Dickerson). They didn't even have a losing season until 86.

Granted the decline was close, but a little better drafting could have made a difference.

The real nose dive came when Danny White got hurt and they had zero answers at QB thereafter.

I know that much but I wasn’t old enough to understand if there was any other significance to the season.

We had an excellent team that year. Definitely Super Bowl caliber and we had several chances to win that game and advance to the super bowl. We were every bit as good as the 49ers that season but shit happens sometimes. I'll always believe we'd have beaten Cincinnati had we gotten the chance.

Keep in mind I wasn't even 10 years old yet so memory and understanding of the team that season is likely imperfect.

Btw the game is on YouTube if anyone wants to watch.

Top comment: "Everyone remembers the catch but man that game saving tackle by Eric Wright at the end was just as important."

Very, very true.

Eric Wright's horse-collar cost him the tip of his finger from what I recall.

That game was so epic. It definitely split what was the pattern at the time.

It is truly a "What If?" game, except people think it stopped with the Clark TD.

The game had so many facets to it.

Anyone think Quinn has an advantage over Shanahan having worked together in Atlanta?
Other than trying to understand how he has matured, not really.

Not the same guy.

He definitely got spanked after that, but Quinn took the heat as the HC.

Just makes you wonder if that refusal to rush was Shanahan or Quinn.
