It's starting to make sense now.
Money is the sticking point.
McCarthy wants to come back but knows he's severely underpaid.
Jerry wants him back but doesn't want to pay him commensurate with what most other coaches get.
So Jerry is cryptic about whether he's going to resign him because if he can't get him cheaply he'll let him walk but pretend he wanted to go in a different direction.
McCarthy's camp has been floating these rumors about other teams being interested because he wants the Cowboys to up their offer.
Jerry wants to drag his feet and play this out as long as possible in the hopes that McCarthy's other options dry up and he'll be forced to take Jerry's offer.
Jerry's talking about incentive based contracts because he sees it as a compromise - the only way he wants to pay McCarthy more is if he earns it through winning.
Except that's not how it works league wide. Seattle just hired an unproven assistant at almost double super bowl winning McCarthy's salary.
Payton has a very similar resume to McCarthy and makes about triple McCarthy's salary.
I'm guessing none of them have heavily incentive based contracts.
Jerry is an out of touch moron.
