Hate to cite Broaddus because he's a wackjob so often, but I had to agree with him on something he said this morning... that the problems he sees with the run defense aren't so much scheme or ability, but people not playing their assignments, like losing contain outside. He said Quinn gives these guys great latitude to go make a play if they see it, but too often they're overdoing it.

Nate agreed with him on that, and said Jimmy and Wannstedt gave them latitude like that also, but if they messed something up, they had to play their straight assignment for like the next 10 plays in a row.

Jerry is an asshole. Sorry but he is kind of dumping shit on Pollard for no reason all to prop up a RB who is a shell of his former self.
No shit, even if he was stupid enough to pay him way over his value. Die, Jerry, die.

I can see that.

For example, it's very clear to me that each time D-Law whiffed on the read option against both the Eagles and the Bears is because he bit on the fake each and every time despite being in perfect position to get the QB each time.

I'm guessing that's because he's given the freedom to decide there but it's clear to me that he needs to be told to just commit to the QB from now on.

My point is, I can totally see this latitude thing being a legit reason for some of these runs but if that's what it is, then Quinn may need to reign that in a little bit because we're giving up way too much on the ground.

I think that's definitely a big piece of it, Quinn just has to be smart enough to know when to let them roam and when to rein them in.

When we're playing these run-first QB's with simplistic passing games that's the time to rein them in.

This is exactly right, you're going against Tom Brady, go ahead and free lance. When you've got Justin Fields who couldn't complete a pass from the pocket with any consistency, slow it down, make sure you hold your assignments and hell you're still talented enough to get plenty of sacks and pressure still.

You’re damn lucky we didn’t make this a haircut bet!

Howard Richards, 1981
Great catch, @Foobio !

In the 1981 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys were targeting cornerback Bobby Butler with their first round selection,[2] but settled on Richards (26th overall) after Butler was taken by the Atlanta Falcons. This was only the third time in franchise history that the Cowboys used a first round pick on an offensive lineman, with John Niland and Robert Shaw being chosen before.

Tank got burned several times not holding the outside, not sure why he wasn't flushing the run back in.
