- For all-time DT, you think Lilly is routinely outside Top 3? Behind Mean Joe Greene? Fair. Behind Buchanan. Possibly. Behind Merlin Olsen and Alan Page? Sometimes...for you to say ‘remotely’ far from true, you make it sound like Lilly is a middle-of-pack HOFer, which I’ve never heard of. Im interested to see where you think Lilly ranks, and/or your perception of where the general public ranks Lilly.

Yeah. I'd put him up there. He was a very, very good corner. Without that achilles tear, I think he could have been HOF caliber great.

Pup was a good corner his first three years before the injury. But to say he was Hall Of Fame great in that time span is a stretch, especially in an era where most teams ran the ball.

Allen played guard most of his career so there is always a handicap.

But he was unquestionably dominant. He is right up there in the discussion for me.

That's great to hear Lilly getting that much love. Usually the old timers get discounted just because it was so long ago, but I guess all those Pro Bowls and first team All-Pros are too hard to ignore.

Fair enough. LA was my #2.

With younger fans, LA probably would be #1 and we all know iamtdg has the capacity of a 19 year old girl rushing Delta Delta Delta.

For reference, the other guards that popped up higher than LA in those rankings from my earlier post are John Hannah, Gene Upshaw and Bruce Matthews.

Pleasantly surprised by the love Tony Dorsett still gets. For many rankings, he got ranked higher than I originally thought he would.

For Emmitt, it’s funny Gil Brandt of all people has him the lowest.

As a child, my brothers and I lived with my dad in some apartments in Dallas called The Village. It so happened that Mel Renfro lived there too. I used to play with his kids, and every once in a while we would see him running around. I was young, but since I had spent much quality time watching games at Texas Stadium, I was well aware of just how good he was. He was Deion before Deion. He was a ball hawk, a sure tackler, and a threat to score from multiple positions: defense, special teams (punt and kick return). Mel Renfro is one of my 5 all time Cowboys.

I'm not being nitpicky. My impression is that's what we were talking about all along, and that's certainly what my initial response was about. Talking about what professionals or experts think is not at all what I meant. I'm talking about Joe Fan, which is what I thought you were talking about.

I'd be very surprised if you started a poll on r/nfl if Lilly got even in the top 5 for greatest DT in history.

That’s fine. Based on your feedback, When I stated fans, I hereby declare that I meant fans that know history and also referred to modern age. So left flanker Curly Jim Jackson from 1912 doesn’t count and neither do 9-year old fans that think OBD is better than Jerry Rice.
