If that number is even remotely close, then you have 10% of roughly 3M people in this country. I'd say that's enough people to take their consideration into account.

I actually don't think that's true. If anything it ebbs and flows on the whims of culture. But I don't think there is any eternal march of evolutionary progress towards ultimate tolerance.

In fact, I think we're actually less tolerant today (by the strict definition of tolerance) than when I was growing up.

We know that the word was intended as a derogatory slur towards gay people. But growing up, our generation used it in jest towards one another as a way of insulting someone for being cowardly or for displaying behavior that wasn't considered manly.



I have used this term in that manner COUNTLESS times and had it used towards me.

Now, I don't take offense to the word whatsoever. And with people who I KNOW won't take offense to it, I still use it around them. Hell, I told my cousin just the other day "not to be a fag" and meet me at the bar.

Having said that, just as @Prodigal_Son pointed out, we live in a time where people feel more empowered and the LGBTQ community has made it aware just how hurtful that word is to them.

For them, it's the equivalent of the N word and I respect that. That's why I don't use that word openly AT ALL anymore.

Again, I use it only within a very small circle of people that I know are ok with it.

I also don't use it to describe a gay person like I would have about 10 year ago.

Why? Because times change and the world evolves.

So while that word doesn't offend me whatsoever, I do get that it hurts other people and therefore I've greatly reduced my use of that term.

YES, there are plenty of people in this sensitive society who make themselves out to be victims when they are not.

I am in 100% agreement with you there.

But there are genuine examples of people speaking out more because they feel more empowered and accepted.

A perfect example? Look at black people as a whole.

No other race has been the recipient of blatant racism and discrimination than they have. And once upon a time in this country, they knew it was best to shut up and just go with whatever was going on around them because objecting to it would come with serious consequences, even death.

But the world evolved, right? And eventually black people felt more empowered and/or safe about speaking out about those prejudices.

The same thing has happened with people of other groups and communities.

So yeah, lots of people who feel offended or act like victims are totally full of shit.

But there are other groups who were legitimate victims of discrimination who eventually do feel empowered to speak out because the world evolves and it becomes safer for them to do so.
