Yeah I think it's the common pick right now but I don't think there is much smoke causing it. A least not from what I'm reading and hearing. Sure sounds more like, these people are looking for a spot for Mayer in the first round, and they think Dallas has a need at TE. It really doesn't seem like there is much more to it.

I'm good with that and it's kinda the sweet spot to find a good one; Witten (3rd round) and Schultz (4th round).
That's kind of how I view it. A lot easier to find a TE in those rounds than say a DT or WR for example. Now there are exceptions to everything so I'm not saying you can't find impact players at those positions in the third round and later but it certainly appears less common.
I got you. It's kinda one of those positions that - since it's not a "premium" position - you can find pretty good ones in the middle rounds, similar to RB, which is why I'd only back taking a TE high if they are special (like if there was a Tony Gonzalez type, heck yeah, it's a no brainier).
Kelce was a 3rd rounder as well.
The funny thing about TE is if you find a Kittle or Kelce (Or Gronk not all that long ago) it is a premium position. Those two guys are every bit as valuable as a dynamic WR for example. They can play 10+ years in the NFL. But the problem is the vast, vast majority of TE's aren't that impactful. And solid TE's aren't that premium in my opinion. I would say TE can be a premium position but you have to find a TE who can be dynamic in the passing game for that to be true. And most of these guys don't end up that dynamic.
Yeah, guys like Kittle and Kelce are essentially gigantic receivers that are too big for a CB, too fast for a LB or S so the mismatch factor makes them extremely impactful. And whatever normal rules about how you value TE go out the window if one like them is there. Just extremely rare. But even a lot of those types can still slip through the cracks (like Kittle).
