It's going to be real tight but we could probably sign Schultz to a 5/68 type contract with a first year cap hit in the 4-6 range, which is basically what we'd be saving by cutting Jarwin.

I agree that Gregory is probably the number one priority overall though.
That's what I would do. Use our cap money on Gregory. And since Jarwin's contract is sort of an easy out, if I can play with the cap numbers so that Schultz has similar cap numbers early in the contract I would make the switch.

Gallup it all depends on cost. We are going to have to pay Lamb when he comes due. If Gallup is willing to take a deal like you mentioned I am in. If not that is ok.

If they keep playing like this, a bunch of the FA are going to get inflated deals and we'll lose them. Hopefully we get good comp picks and hit a couple of Dak's with those.

1. Gregory
2. Diggs

I’d lock up Diggs long term as soon as possible. It’s been forever since we’ve had someone in the secondary that can take the ball and give it back to the offense.

I’m hoping Gregory gets a contract that reflects his value, but also the teams commitment to giving him chance after chance.

I don't think we can extend Diggs until after his 3rd year, or maybe sometime during his 3rd year.

The big question none of us knows the answer to is how much the cap will be going up or how soon, next year it's 208 but I wouldn't be surprised if 2 years from now it's 250 given that COVID has slowed/rolled back the normal increases.

According to Spotrac we are about $9 million over next year's cap. If we cut Jarwin and Anthony Brown that gets us to neutral, basically no cap space.

We could cut some schlubs here and there (Trysten Hill) and open up a few million in space but ultimately we're going to need to restructure guys like Dak and Cooper, who we know aren't going anywhere, to open up space. Luckily we can rather easily open up about $20-30 million by just restructuring those two. We could also save $8 million by cutting Lawrence, although something tells me they're more likely to restructure him than cut him.

I tend to think that we just need to make the moves we need to make now to keep our core guys and wait for the inevitable cap explosion in the next 2-3 years.

What would be Randy Gregory’s contract comp? Robert Quinn got 5/$70M with $30M guaranteed. Gregory is 3 years younger 28.

Can we even keep 2 of the 3 - Gregory, Gallup, Schultz?

Historically, the salary cap has increased about $10M so that brings us Even Steven with our approx -$10M going into 2022

My hope is some teams shy away from Gregory in free agency because of his history. We'd obviously be the most comfortable with it because we have worked with him all this time. I'm not asking for a hometown discount necessarily but I think other teams could be a bit leery about him because of all the suspensions and missed time.

Gregory also appreciates the patience the organization has afforded him. I doubt he wants to go anywhere. This is a little unique.

Yeah I mean the Cowboys have had his back when basically no one else would have. Hell a lot of Cowboys fans didn't even understand why we didn't cut bait and move on.

More recent comparisons are Carl Lawson, Dante Fowler and Trey Hendrickson.

And yes, I think we can afford 2 of 3 even if both deals average somewhere between 12-15/year. We'd just lose guys like Connor Williams, LVE (not huge losses) and probably a few rotational types like Hooker and Urban.

Sounds like things could get dicey the next few years, so I guess there's only one thing we should go ahead and do this year...

When is the last time we cut someone as a cap casualty? We will make it work with both of them, and I believe Gallup too.

Yeah, like me. I still fear we give him a huge contract and then be gets suspended. The offer needs to have lots of language about suspensions.

I'm guessing we'll have plenty of money if we want it.
Yeah I think by now it’s clear the cap is an arbitrary number that really doesn’t mean anything in the big picture. Plenty of contracts to restructure to free up money on paper.

He was coming on last year before Dak got hurt and remained solid even with the rotating carousel of QB's. I don't think he's up there with the elite of the elite (Kelce/Kittle/Waller, maybe Hockenson or Pitts in a year or two) but he's pretty solidly in that 2nd tier with someone like Mark Andrews, who in reality is usually in the top 5 TE's in terms of production.

My big thing with him is that he seems to have an excellent rapport with Dak, is adept at finding soft spots in coverage with defenses focused on Cooper/Lamb, and is probably our best run blocking TE. He brings more variety to the offense than someone like Gallup.

13/year or what have you is a tough pill to swallow but at this point I'd rather have Cooper/Lamb/Wilson/Schultz than Cooper/Lamb/Gallup/Jarwin.

We'll have to see how Gallup looks when he comes back, and I'd certainly love to bring him back if we can finagle him into a below market deal (8-10/year), but it's just hard to imagine him getting less than 13-14/year when guys like Corey Davis, Curtis Samuel and Agholor have been signing for around 11-12/year.

If we theoretically could get Gallup for 8-10, while Schultz is demanding 13-14, I'd let Schultz walk for that difference.
I’d rather Cooper Lamb Gallup Jarwin but I suspect we can have Schultz too.

I’m beginning to hate the hard cap.

They should transition to a soft cap.

Maybe it will.

The way the league is going, it is headed towards an NBA-style of entertainment anyways.
