He didn't get along with Garrett. Yes, seriously.
There were rumors they had an argument where they were mad enough to be screaming at each other right before he left

Effort, fan reaction, parting moments: 10 things to watch for in Cowboys’ season finale

By Jon Machota 2h ago

FRISCO, Texas — There’s still a chance that Sunday won’t feature the Cowboys’ final game of the 2019 season. A Dallas win over Washington and a Philadelphia loss to New York would mean Dallas hosts a wild card playoff game next weekend at AT&T Stadium.
Since that seems unlikely, let’s just focus on Sunday’s Week 17 matchup.

Here are 10 things to watch for when the 7-8 Cowboys host the 3-12 Redskins at 3:25 CT.

1.) What kind of effort will be on display? This has been a disappointing season. Jason Garrett isn’t expected to see a new contract. Several key players are about to hit free agency. The Redskins have nothing to play for. Will that all lead to poor effort from some players? One of the first things mentioned when others talk about Garrett-coached teams is that his players always play hard for him. Will that be true against Washington, or will there be noticeable loafing after Dallas blew its best opportunity to win the NFC East last Sunday in Philadelphia?

2.) Will Dak Prescott play any better after missing another week of practice? Missing most of the practices leading up to the Eagles game because of an injured throwing shoulder seemed to impact Prescott’s accuracy last Sunday. His receivers also struggled, dropping too many passes. The Cowboys quarterback has been limited again this week. Backup QB Cooper Rush has taken all of the first-team reps during practice. Will Prescott be sharper against Washington? His name was being mentioned in MVP discussions through the first 10 games. The last five haven’t been great.

Prescott through the first 10 games: Completed 68 percent of his passes, 322 yards per game, 21 touchdowns, nine interceptions, 104.1 passer rating.

Prescott through the last five games: Completed 60 percent of his passes, 276 yards per game, five touchdowns, two interceptions, 85.0 passer rating.

3.) How will Amari Cooper play? One of the biggest stories this week: Cooper not being on the field during the biggest play of the season last week, 4th-and-8 with 1:21 remaining. Cooper and the Cowboys say it was just part of the team’s receiver rotation. Most would say the Cowboys’ No. 1 receiver needs to be on the field during the biggest play of the game. Cooper is adamant that he’s healthy, but in the loss to the Eagles, he was on the field for fewer snaps than Michael Gallup and Randall Cobb. That’s not exactly what you see from the game’s top receivers, like New Orleans’ Michael Thomas and Atlanta’s Julio Jones. The Cowboys want to keep Cooper and he wants to stay in Dallas. But if they’re going to pay him among the game’s elite, he has to be a factor in the team’s biggest plays. Cooper over the last six games: 43 targets, 22 receptions, 249 yards, one touchdown.

4.) How will Jerry Jones handle his usual postgame interview if the Cowboys are officially eliminated from the playoffs? Since Jason Garrett’s contract is technically up at the end of the season, Jones won’t be firing the team’s head coach. It will likely be worded as the Cowboys aren’t renewing his contract and they are parting ways. But how will Jones handle questions about the future at the head coaching position? Will he say they are moving in another direction or allow Garrett to have an end-of-season news conference? Will Jones answer questions about what he’s looking for in his next head coach or will he decline out of respect for Garrett?

5.) How will Jason Garrett handle his postgame news conference if the season is officially over? Will he acknowledge that he probably won’t be back? Will he say he believes he’s done enough to deserve a new contract? Garrett has been a master at not saying anything noteworthy in these situations.

Garrett’s response when asked Thursday how often he thinks about his coaching future: “Not a whole lot.” When will he? “I guess at some point in the future.”

Garrett was also asked about his job security on a conference call with Redskins reporters this week: “I don’t really focus on that much at all. I really just try to focus on what I need to do each day to help our team play its best on Sunday, and that’ll continue to be my focus.”
Garrett on the challenges of coaching with constant job speculation: “Again, I don’t really think much about that at all. I just focus on doing my job as well as I can do it.”

6.) What is going on at cornerback? Byron Jones injured his right ankle in practice on Wednesday. He was in a walking boot on Friday and is considered a game-time decision. Chidobe Awuzie is coming off a game where he was benched early on in favor of Jourdan Lewis. Awuzie continued to play a significant amount of snaps in Dallas’ nickel and dime packages, but it’s clear that the coaches were not pleased with how he started the game. Cornerback is quickly becoming one of the Cowboys’ biggest offseason needs.

7.) How will Troy Aikman handle calling his fourth consecutive Cowboys game? This will be the seventh Cowboys game this season handled by the FOX crew of Aikman, Joe Buck and Erin Andrews. Dallas is 2-4 in the previous six. After broadcasting the Week 1 win over the Giants and the Week 5 loss to the Packers, Aikman didn’t get assigned another Cowboys game until Week 12 at New England. He will close out the regular season doing five of their last six. The legendary Cowboys QB hasn’t been shy about sharing his criticism for how his former team has been run during this disappointing season. It should be interesting to hear his thoughts throughout the game.

8.) What type of crowd should be expected at AT&T Stadium? It will be sold out, but will it be loud? And if so, will we hear cheers or boos? There have been some signs and shirts in previous weeks asking Santa for a new head coach. But for the most part, the home crowds have been supportive. Will frustration lead to any noticeable negative cheers or chants during the game?

9.) How often will the big screen show the score of the Eagles game? Cowboys players have maintained that they are focused on the Redskins, certainly a message Garrett has been preaching this week. But fans will want to know, especially if the Eagles are losing, opening a window for the Cowboys to win the NFC East and host a playoff game. And if the Cowboys win and Eagles lose, will everyone be back in, thinking a playoff run is possible? Or will skepticism remain because of how Dallas has performed against playoff-caliber opponents all season?

10.) How many current Cowboys will be playing in their final game with the team? Dak Prescott and Amari Cooper are in the last year of their rookie contracts, but it would be pretty shocking if either didn’t remain with the franchise for the foreseeable future. The same can’t be said for others about to enter free agency — like Robert Quinn, Byron Jones, Maliek Collins, Randall Cobb, Sean Lee, Jason Witten, Michael Bennett, Jeff Heath, Anthony Brown and Tavon Austin. The Cowboys will try to keep some, but certainly, not all will be back.

Based on the hairy forearms I'm gonna assume that's a guy and not some dyke librarian. #35? Must be a Calvin Hill fan.

Those names in bold are players they should allow to walk. I threw Quinn in there simply because his asking price will probably be too high. If they can bring him back on a solid deal that won't cripple the team, then I'm all for him returning. The other names in bold need to be shown the door.

Heath is a name that may shock some but I actually wouldn't mind having him back in a reserve role, if possible. Regardless, I look to upgrade the position via the draft with or without Heath.

With a strong tackle class coming up, they should consider one where the value is right.

We're fucked without Byron Jones. Basically guarantees we're drafting a 1st round corner. If Awuzie was stepping up it'd be different, but he's been so bad he was benched.

Also, our pass rush is not very good without Quinn unless we can guarantee Dr. Weed comes back (which obviously we can't).

The whole defense is a mess. You also have to consider LB as a need as well.

Byron Jones hasn't been that good either. A middle of the pack FA could match his level of play.

I'm assuming you're saying CB will be on the table for our 1st round pick because the Cowboys aren't shy about taking CBs with their 1st round picks.

Agreed. In all honesty we just have to hope a scheme change can get more out of his group because there's no way in hell we can upgrade all the trouble spots in one offseason.

My priorities would be:

1. DL
2. Safety
3. MLB
4. CB
