Exactly. I just hope they can make a serviceable QB out of him and that draft pick wasn't flushed. Taking anyone's job as a starter is waaaay down the road, if it ever happens at all.
Yeah right now he just needs to make himself a good backup. Focus on getting better. He is still so raw and far away from actually competing.

You cut Cooper Rush and roll the dice with Trey at QB2 and open up a roster spot for the Leupke.
I don't think I would even be comfortable with that. Rush has at least shown that the stage isn't too big for him. He isn't perfect, but he is at least steady and reliable. Not sure if Lance can be relied on at all really, although, with his legs, you wouldn't have to change the playbook up much (theoretically...)

If Lance had to play I'd go very Lamar Jackson with the offense right now. Lots of read options.

The thing I kept hearing from Goof Son and others is that this is also about aligning the backup to the starter so the offense does not have to undergo a facelift if Prescott goes down.

When Prescott was out last year, they supposedly had to recreate the offensive attack around Rush and eliminate anything with mobility involved. Let's be honest, that 4-1 was pretty remarkable and I bet his red-headed ass couldn't repeat that over another five games.

If that was part of the motivation, we suddenly got smart about the backup QB position.

It's not like Dak is a runner, though. He never really was but he surely isn't now.

Kinda surprised the Skins Commanders didn't make a run at him. It's not like Howell is a slam dunk QB1 who doesn't need competition.

dumb: extending Dak
dumber: thinking Lance is the future
You have to extend Dak until you seriously give yourself another option. Especially when the rest of the team is competitive.

That’s why I’m pissed they never drafted a guy.

Lance is a total project, though, more like a 4th-5th rounder than a 2nd (and def not 1st or top five).

He does have some raw measurables that could translate to stardom if he ever figures out actual NFL QBing, but the effort it will take to get him there might take his own personal QB coach.

What bugs me is this all just a big excuse not to take an actual shot in the late 1st or 2nd round next year.

Fricking shortcut, there is no easy way to do this. You have to draft a real prospect, or you’ll end up with another Prescott— a guy with flaws but enough skills to win most games vs average competition

I mean, this is a guy who never seriously threatened Brock Purdy or even his backup

The most overlooked aspect of Cooper Rush's 4-1 record is the Cowboys defense only allowed 13 ppg in the 4 wins. He was basically playing the 2000 Trent Dilfer role.

Kinda helps that defensive PPG when the QB isn't giving the ball to the other team, though... :tippytoe

You have to give Lance the Aaron Rodgers treatment. You have to view it as we are going to teach this kid from the ground up and hope in two years he is ready to blossom. And even then Dak could still be our QB. But you never know what could happen two years from now.

Lance has first round traits but he has a long way to go to develop them.

One of the problems is, in two years he's a free agent unless you pick up his option for like 25 million. They'll be in a rough spot to try to get value out of their investments in him.
