Dealing with that now. I've learned to just park on the outskirts of the UTA campus and walk. I've started just leaving about half an hour early to account for the long walk.

I wish our students would do the same. Instead, they end up parking either illegally, or constantly bitching about one of the most robust busing systems in the nation.

I've learned the more useful mass transit is the more people bitch about it. That's human nature. If something works well enough for you to be able to depend on it, then you will spend most of your time complaining about the times it slightly inconveniences you. New Yorkers have it so good many of them don't even have to learn to drive. But all you ever hear about is how bad the subway is.

We also used it to help train our parking enforcement officers. They aren't cops, but you would be amazed how parking makes people lose their ever-loving minds. So, they need to have that skill of de-escalation, as well.

That is so true. We get complaints about a bus being 4 mins late. Yes, seriously. Our on-campus buses run on 6 minute headways. Meaning 6 mins between buses. All it takes is an accident in the roadway or even an ambulance throwing off the traffic light sequence to cause a 4 min delay. And, these little cretins bitch about that little shit daily.

Illegals shouldn't be going to our schools (bless their hearts) and should be scared of police deporting their asses. Minority kids grow up to see police arrest their beloved adult role models (beloved even though they're criminals) and minority kids in general being raised to fear the police (across all social strata).

Makes sense this group is scared, but doesn't mean we should stop hi-five Fridays just to appease this group. Maybe you'll make a friend or at least have one kickass DeNiro/Pacino Heat conversation.

I think it was collaborative, but my point was that F&F wanted to paint it as the police getting shut down by the school, when the police chief was the one hearing the complaints.

Because right wingers always want to paint cops as this oppressed minority.

The story reads a lot differently when it's "cops didn't want to disrupt the education of students who were uncomfortable around them", instead of "elementary school bans cops cuz of ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS"

Officers deserve credit for recognizing some issues with their community and acting compassionately. But that won't make you upset, and if you aren't upset, Fox News isn't doing it's job.

Police are all about getting to kids as a proactive way of letting them see us as friendly and someone to trust etc. I bet money the school went to them and instigated this. It's totally opposite of what a community minded agency would do right now. So the Chief may have complied, but .....Keep in mind that is just my guess, but it's at least an educated one.

As far as I can tell there were no illegal immigrants, nothing I found pointed to that being an issue. Fox News just put that buzzword in because it's a great way to be grossly irresponsible and feed the outrage machine.

From what I read some parents called the police chief complaining that the police presence upset their kid, and the police chief and superintendent decided it was better to scrap "high five fridays" if it was going to be a distraction for those students.

There's no telling why those kids were upset by police presence.

During a school committee meeting, concerns were raised that not all children would feel comfortable with a police presence at the beginning of the school day. Others started to question the long-term impacts of the program and wondered if the program was valuable.

After the meeting, police were asked to pause the program, which they did.

I have also seen this, which tends to refute what you're saying:

“It was presented as an inexpensive (aka free) way for police officers to positively engage with youth in their communities and to show support for local schools. We loved the idea!” the Northampton Police Department announced in a statement Saturday. “Everyone was on board. Principals and teachers communicated the High Five Friday plan to staff, students, and families. But apparently not everyone was pleased with the presence of law enforcement at the schools.

That could be. Obviously you're the only person with experience in this field. But I think it's safe to say the police band the school district collaborated over the decision. Which was not expressed in the tweet.
