Shut up. I am old.

So anyways, finally got started with just a small garden with only peppers to start, waiting on brussel sprouts, cucumbers and squash.

The peppers have been awesome. Nothing better than picking it your damn self and eating it.

I'm going to start one next year. Was thinking about jalapenos and tomatoes.
 
That said, I was thinking about picking up that little raised garden beds from Costco and start out with growing our own herbs, just to see how that goes. The last time I did any gardening was probably the summer of '81 or '82.
 
A big problem I have is not space but what is around me. Deer and crows will eat the shit out of most stuff, so selectivity is important.
 
Yup we have a garden going in our new house.

Planted 4 jalapeño plants, 1 ghost pepper plant, 2 rosemary’s, 2 tomato plants (one planted much later than the other), 1 cucumber plants, 4 basil plants, 1 dill, 1 parsley.

The Jalapenos are killing it so far, I probably have 60-80 peppers. Tomato’s and cucumbers just starting to come in.

Just put a couple tablespoons around the base of the plant, then water.

When you first plant them? Or after they begin to bloom?
 
I've done a garden for years but our weather has been total crap (way too hot and dry) the last several years. This year we've actually had good rains so it's been incredible. I've had to fight the collards getting so huge they shade out everything else.

With our typical weather, I have much better luck with a fall garden. You guys in the south might try that next.

One thing I never would have expected but found I really liked is carrots. Everything is better home grown than store bought, but those really are. Never had a carrot that had any taste until I grew my own.

Another thing I started a couple of years ago is blackberries. Besides liking eating them, they're easy to grow. It's fun watching them grow like crazy every year and unlike a tomato they're perennial so only have to buy them once.

I used to get yelled at as a kid because we grew peas in our garden and when I would have to go pick them I would always come back in the house with much less than I should have. Those things were delicious coming off the plant and right out of the pod.

I bought existing plants (not from seeds) and I put it down right when I planted them.

I think you can do it any time though. The first time I tried to grow jalapeños a few years ago, they would keep flowering and flowering but I wasn’t getting any peppers. I looked it up online and someone said use epsom salt. I did, and like immediately after I started seeing peppers. Within days. Lots.

Obviously when I put the salt right from the beginning it still takes the plants a while to produce peppers, but, I’ve got tons and tons of peppers this year, so it must work. It’s something about the soil, at least here in NC, the pepper plants might need whatever nutrients are in the Epsom salt to produce fruits.

I’d like to do strawberries but we tried them and they never sprouted. We didn’t buy existing plants for them though, we tried from seeds.

IIRC those are difficult from seeds. But where you live in NC they should do well from transplants. My dad says his dad always grew those in a barrel, and he only lived in Ft Worth.

I'm jealous of you guys who get so much rain. I need to move east some day.

Semi-related, anyone into their lawn? I am, but again the last few years have been brutal for that. This year has been great, but it's probably only an average year for a lot of you.
