It didn't help Kanye West pulled his usual act, demanding that Beck acknowledge Beyoncé's musical genius

The irony is thick. Beck is a true musical artist. Writes his own songs, plays instruments, has dabbled in many different musical styles, & has had success/acclaim for > 20 years now.

Beyoncé has all of her songs written for her and has backup singers filling in behind her. Bitch is fine & has a decent voice but she is no 'artist' or creative force. Not at all, in fact. She's a vocalist that would have been long forgotten if she wasn't so attractive/married to Jay-Z.

I don't give a shit how talented Kanye is supposed to be, his egomania & self-importance seems like borderline mental illness to me. And he's so far off the mark here it isn't even funny. Doesn't even matter if you like Beck's music or not, he is a creative musician. Beyoncé is not. Kanye is a fool.

Music is awful these days. Just terrible.

I don't know why people still say this. For some reason, despite the fact that I can find a thousand artists in any genre niche I want just by surfing the web for an hour, people still say today's music sucks because what's on FM radio is bad.

I think you nailed the fact that Kanye has something wrong with him. The guy is just off.

Overall, I agree with skid. Sure there are still good bands out there today, but I really miss the 90's alternative scene. Maybe it's nostalgia as much as anything.

You are actually right about that. There are artists that make good music. None of them are making money though. Popular music is generally disgusting.

I listened to it because that was the music of the time, but the alternative/grunge stuff was a bad time for music. Never got Nirvana, but glad Foo Fighters came out of that. Pearl Jam was/is great, but STP, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden...feh, you can have them. I'll take my 80s era rock over that without hesitation.

Everyone generally clings to the music of their own time no matter their age. It's just the way it is. You can like some stuff from different timeframes but the music of your youth will seemingly always be your favorite.

You can just go ahead and GTFO.

The music of my youth was actually 80's hair bands. The 90s alternative scene really hit while I was in college.

Didn't care for STP at all but liked the other bands. Didn't care for Velvet Revolver either. Soundgarden was probably my favorite of the era.

Velvet Revolver was a legit rock band, not an alternative type. They kicked major ass. So did Audioslave.

Rage Against The Machine was excellent too.

I'll take my 80s guys though...Van Halen, Motley Crue, GNR, Def Leppard, AC/DC...that was greatness. I'll even throw a shout out to Poison, White Lion, Bon Jovi, Tesla, Ratt...shit, I can go on and on here.

As an aside...just about every party in the 80s played Back in Black from beginning to end...or it was not a real party.

Exactly.....well said.

Look, I like rap music, or at least I used to. But the last thing I would consider a rapper to be is a talented "artist", so I don't see this talent that Kanye is supposed to have.

And Beyonce? She can shake her ass well, so she has that going for her. But as you mentioned, she doesn't write her songs, she doesn't play any actual musical instruments nor does she produce anything of note.

Kanye West only admires other "artists" who make the same type of music he does, so it's not like that asshole is the best or most logical person to go to for an opinion. As Booze pointed out, he wouldn't do that if another rapper or R&B person won, and he certainly wouldn't be making the case for a white rock artist to win either.

Fuck that guy.

I liked rock from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. I thought they all brought on quality music and talented bands.

I thought the 70's rock bands had the best natural talent of those 3 eras, but they were all very good in their own right.

Definitely.

Someone in their mid 30's who throws temper tantrums like a 4 year old has to have some mental or emotional issues.

I know I sound like an old man with the "today's music sucks" argument, but if there is a song this good that has been made in recent years, then I haven't heard it:

Now that is talent. :golfclap

I listened to many of those guys in secret due to my heavy metal status in the community in which I associated.

Went to see most of them in concert as well.
