I had a cousin who used to listen to metal in the 80's who would swear against hair bands and bashed me for liking them as a kid, then secretly turn around and listen to them.

I'm with you. It's always out there if you're willing to look for it. LT's point is probably valid with a good chunk of the population…the music of ones' youth is what they hold in highest regard. I would probably not put myself in that category because I have regularly inundated myself with music over the years and have appreciated new music (or what was new at the time) as much or more than music I listened to when I was young.
 
Music went down hill after Antonio Salieri.

There were different levels for sure...you had the Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Judas Priest, etc.

Then you had the more mainsteam...Bon Jovi, Poison, Motley, Def Lep, etc.

I always had Van Halen in a different category...those were/are my boys.

We revered Led Zep too...as kind of the ones who got us from the Beatles to more heavy metal.

Also, I get the pride thing with music too...I shunned U2, The Cure, REM, bands like that because they were not rock and roll to me...even though I secretly rooted for them.

Mr. Big was on the Navy Seals soundtrack and Winger's Headed for Heartbreak is a song I know the lyrics to.

I lvoed 80's music as a whole and liked the alternative and pop bands too.

Inxs and Tears for Fears were two groups I really liked.

Need you Tonight is a great song.

I would never admit to being an INXS fan back in the day...they fell into the artsy farts groups with U2. Not a Tears for Fears fan.

I was always confused by Big Country, mostly because their debut song was also called Big Country.

One summer when I was underage I used to regularly to go to the bowling alley in my local area in order to get someone to buy me beer. Always a lot of 20-something white trash at this particular spot that were more than willing to buy alcohol for underage kids for the price of a pack of smokes or a sixer of Budweiser. Seems like every time I was in there that summer some trashy rocker chick was giving her trashier boyfriend a hickey while Mr. Big's "To Be With You" was playing on the jukebox. They played the hell out of that song at that bowling alley and whenever I hear that song to this day it takes me back to that spot.

That song was made for a bowling alley...meanwhile, Faithfully by Journey was the slow dance song for middle school dances.

"Love Song" by Tesla was another of the hickey ballads that would be in regular rotation at the bowling alley at that time.

Journey, Chicago, Reo Speedwagon, and Air Supply were all big time middle school slow dance heroes. Also for the boy/girl skate at the roller rink (holding hands as we skated around the rink, of course).

Great song and one of the best they made.

That song was pretty much Steve Perry and Neal Schon at their best.
