Most places run a buy 3 get 1 free deal all the time. If you can wait til a holiday weekend, they usually have better deals going on.

Yeah, the shitty thing is that my inspection is due this month and a couple of my tires won't pass.
 
I don't know your car situation but Firestone has some pretty competitive deals on tires for 40k and under. We throw some tires on from there called Destinations that are decent. The ride good and are good tires if you are thinking of a short term answer for whatever reason. They have a 3 for 1 deal going right now as well. They get good reviews on these tires.

Whatever you do, never ever buy Goodyear tires. I have had two sets of them over the years being cheap and well, you get what you pay for.

My Honda uses Continental Tires and they hold up well. Kind of expensive though and most places have to order them.
 
I have an SUV... yeah, I see that Firestone also has Buy 3 Get 1 Free and it looks like I can get each tire for $79.99, which would bring the price for three of them to $240. Which is about the limit of my price range, otherwise I'm going used. I don't know if that price includes balancing, etc, or if they are gonna nickle and dime me.

NTB looks like they are $91 each for "all inclusive" which would bring me to $270, but hopefully that's for everything.

They make it seem like if you don't buy the warranty your car will spontaneously flip over on the road.

Buy tires in relationship to how much you use the vehicle. Also factor in how long you plan to keep the vehicle.

Well it's a 1999 Ford Explorer with 160,000 miles. I walk to work every day so I don't use it for commuting, but maybe once a week or once every two weeks I have to drive an hour or so for court in a different county.

It's main use is running errands around town and occasional road trips to Baltimore, Pittsburgh, etc, to see friends. So I only put like maybe 10k miles on it a year.

I feel like I can get away with cheap tires, so much so that given the age of the car, the past couple years I've been buying used tires. However, every single year when I go in for an inspection they tell me that 2-3 of my tires fail inspection, which then I inevitably replace them with more used tires that will fail again next year.

Since it doesn't seem like I have a major raise coming at my job, and the prospects of finding a new, higher paying job are hit or miss, I can't necessarily count on being able to afford a new car any time soon so I may be stuck with this one for a couple more years. If that's the case, I'm kinda tired of failing inspection for bald tires every year and maybe I should just go ahead and buy three (cheap) new ones (and get the 4th free).
