It is in conservative country. There is a CoC in Lubbock that the local churches tried to kick out of the CoC association for having instruments. The thing about the Churches of Christ is that they are antonymous for the most part

Yeah my church isn't very conservative, my area is though. We also don't belong to a larger group of churches. We are an independent church.

I'm guessing that they still hold to the tenants of the greater group. One of the main ones being works for salvation and also being able to lose one's salvation. Right or wrong?

you're probably right we had a sermon not that long ago on Calvinism and Arminianism (possibly it was confusing) can't recall. I remember that as part of the discussion, i must have gotten the two confused. My bad

We are non denominational and don't believe you can lose your salvation. We are saved to do Christ's work not saved by works. Hope that answers your question.

Gotcha. Thanks for clearing it up for me. I would say that you don't go to a Church of Christ that holds to the traditions of the church around the country.

I have to take umbrage with this. Is it lazy and arrogant if there is no further work to be done?

Religion is an attempt to answer the questions, Where did we come from? And Why are we here?

If the answers are: we just kinda happened, and, no particular reason... what further work is there?

I think it's lazy and irresponsible to be able to brush off life that easily. If there were factual evidence you could lean on to be so matter of fact about it, I would come closer to understanding your stance, but there's not. Just like there's no evidence to what Christians claim either. Both sides are either guessing or relying on faith to bring them to their respective beliefs. Not that I'm any better. I have no clue where we came from or where we are headed. But, I admit that. That seems hard for others to do when it comes to this topic.

I think even if you are an athiest, there is work to be done developing your personal beliefs about right and wrong, especially since you are no longer acknowledging an external authority on the matter. I think there's all the more reason to develop an interest in philosophy, especially ethics.

Right, totally agree, but the metaphysical question is finished, which is what I think we are discussing.

I can't imagine very many atheists would stop growing and developing as a human just because they've decided there's no god.

Or you can rely on common sense.

I can't disprove the existence of a monster in my closet, but I can deduce it based on what I know about the universe.

But truthfully, we aren't talking about and brushing off life at all, what we are really talking about is whether the specific deity of the Christians, Jews and Muslims exists.

My own feeling is very close to the thoughts posted from Stephen fry above. I used to be very strong in my faith. Little by little it was chipped away at by the circumstances of this world. Then one day it hit me. There either is no god, or he's a huge asshole.

As a philosophical question , why would anyone be discussing atheists in a religion thread since they do not believe in any form of religion that recognizes metaphysical existence?

Because atheists are attempting to answer the fundamental question of whether there's a higher power at all.

And since I'm married, I can confirm unequivocally that there is.

I concur with the second part. I was under the impression that atheist had answered the higher power question to their satisfaction and the answer for them was that a higher power does not exist.
