I mean I understand it. I'm not going to get excited about passing on a guy who missed last season because of injury.
But he looked fine, even exceptional, at his pro day and was the best DB in the nation in 2024. In every year the kid had 7 PD's and he improved year over year before getting hurt. This is a guy who at last looks far removed from injury.
I can only hope the rest of the NFL feels as conservatively as this guy is describing the Cowboys would be, but I think there's a chance this guy might not make it past the top ten. He certainly won't make it past Philadelphia at 23 or the Seahawks at 30.
Ideally...
1) I'd trade down from 12 for equivalent draft capital.
2) Then at 20 I'd still trade down with the Chargers at 22 and get pick 123 if possible.
The second we do the Eagles might trade up with PIT, but if they don't I'd be very happy with..
3) McCoy at 22 (providing we have extra picks including another late 1st). I know I keep talking about the depth at CB, but I think we might be getting top ten value at 22. Call this a swing for the fences. If McCoy is gone before 20, still trade down and draft Peter Woods or Akheem Mesidor.
4) Then with our last 1st rounder I'd grab Anthony Hill Jr. A slight reach, unless we can trade down again, but I think there's a real danger one of the last teams in the first takes a shot at him. If Mesidor is somehow still there, take him over Hill, and shed a small tear.
Hill's a real pet cat, gotta say, and I have him over J-Rod. He's very underrated in this draft, especially his ability to rush the passer. In that regard, I think he's more instinctive and certainly more productive than CJ Allen. He also has that Alpha energy I think we badly need, and was a bigger threat to opposing offenses relative to his teammates than Allen was on the Bulldogs.
5) Hopefully we've netted a late 2nd, extra 3rd, and pick 123 in the 4th.
The "Pet Cat draft" would net
- EDGE one of Malachi Lawrence, Deni Dennis-Sutton or Gabe Jacas
- DT Caleb Banks or RB Jadarian Price
- CB Deangelo Ponds (pound for pound the best defender) or CB/FS Treydon Stukes (love the hybrid ability plus the speed)
Then with our 4th rounders grab:
- OT Austin Barber or Dametrious Crownover
- DT Darrell Jackson Jr. or RB Jonah Coleman if we took Banks instead of Price. If neither are there, take a swing at BPA at TE, LB, or DT.
In the 5th:
- CB Ephesians Prysock -- perfect Legion of Boom type build
- DT Nick Barrett (sleeper)
- LB Harold Perkins Jr.
Then we'd have before long...
- A secondary with Thompson, Bland, McCoy( or Stukes), and Ponds coached by Parker
- Overshown (0) and Hill Jr (00?) at ILB with Hill getting the green dot
- EZ, Gary, and Mesidor (or Lawrence) as rushers
- Williams, Clark, and Banks/Jackson up front
Barber/Crownover lining up to replace Steele, with Jadarian Price our lead back alongside Williams, or Williams backed by Coleman
Not bad.
