Pick 11: Caleb Downs SAFETY

I think some of that is hindsight, nobody thought Parsons would be the sort of edge rusher he turned into.

He was thought of as a traditional LB who could give you elite blitzing ability, maybe in the mold of a Wagner or Devin White.
He was considered an elite prospect, higher than Rousseau and any other rushers. He started to slide down boards as Horn and Surtain climbed. Initial lists had him as a top five talent. That didn’t come from his off-ball talent. He personally wrecked the opposition with his pass rush in his final college bowl game.

If it wasn’t for four mostly overrated QBs pushing him down, we’d never have had a shot at drafting him. Straight up as a prospect, he was clearly better than Reese who the Cowboys had rated higher than Downs

I’m watching the replay of Caleb’s press conference today. I can’t believe this kid is 21. He is mature, bright, and the commanding presence/leadership stuff is no joke. He is completely at ease. Definitely a magnetic personality.

He is a departure from what we have trotted out there ever since Woodson quit.

I think Caleb allows us to play a lot more nickel defense. Having him in the slot in some ways is like having a small third LBer on the field. Which means you don't have to be as afraid of the run when you're in nickel defense. Ultimately it wouldn't surpise me if we lean pretty heavily on the nickel because we have a special talent like Downs.

Yea that's how the league is moving, hybrid slot guys who can also function closer to the LOS as a light LB.

That's basically exactly how Seattle used Emmanwori last year.

Just watched Caleb's press conference.

So many intellectual and personality traits just jump out at you. Very impressive guy.

Hell, he made Jerry wait like five minutes to talk, which Jerry commented on and you know he hated. That alone makes me love Caleb.

Yeah listening to him speak you can tell he is a highly intelligent guy. Plus his sister is in med school.

I think he's going to quickly establish himself as the leader of the Cowboys secondary. I think it's safe to assume we're going to see a more cohesive secondary with the addition of him and Christian Parker.
