I know he's a solid enough coach, I just personally have never been impressed with him for whatever reason. I assume he'll run more the Marinelli style also, which is my least favorite defense even if it can work.

Listened (because it was paywalled) to Nick Harris FWST article and he said Dak was "standing on the table" for BS. Also, they gave credit to BS for the changes they made several games into the season in 2023 when the offense took off.

Campo and Schottenheimer are getting the gig for the exact same reasons.

And for as much as we all make fun of Campo, he was the the DC for the 95 Cowboys was he not?

And the 95 Dallas Cowboys defense was the #1 defense in all of football -- a SB winning defense at that.

So if anything, you could say Campo was more qualified to get a gig before Schottenheimer, but that's grasping at straws.

They're both total shit candidates who have no business being given that responsibility.

Ace, I hear your point, I was mainly trying to maybe clarify what someone else might have meant. I get that this is a hiring based on familiarity, continuity, and generally being a puppet.

I will say though that Dave Campo was a completely homegrown poodle, and his only history was with Jimmy as a fringe assistant, and he was elevated to DC in 1995 by Jones himself. I’d say Campo was a top defensive coach the same way Barry Switzer was responsible for the Cowboys’ third Superbowl victory in four years.

Schottenheimer has been an NFL coach for many (albeit many not so good) teams since 1997, and 14 of those years were as OC.

He is the definition of average— baseline conservative, good when he has talent, and never great in big moments

Umm, that’s a very shallow analysis. Schottenheimer over-emphasized the run, if anything, until “let Russ cook” became the mantra in 2020.

The challenge was Schottenheimer didn’t know fuck all what to do when teams dropped into two-deep coverage to stop Wilson’s deep passes.

I guess if you go by points against they were 13th. That's the stat that matters most. Not that 13th was impressive. But ultimately the game is about scoring points. Not gaining yards.

He had some really good defenses with the Colts though. Which is how he parlayed it into the Bears job. Some guys are just better coordinators than head coaches. He appears to be one of them.
