Cowboys Trade For George Pickens

That's a lot of coulda woulda shoulda. And every team can do it, every year. What if we had traded up for one of those CBs that everyone under the sun said we were enamored with instead of holding and getting Parsons? What if we had drafted Joe Montana instead of Robert Shaw (who?) or Aaron Mitchell (who?) or Doug Cosbie. (at least he was a player) All those guys went ahead of Montana. Maybe we don't fall like we did in the 80s. But then, we more than likely would have never been in position for Jimmy Johnson and the 90's dynasty, either.

Yeah, it just hammers home the point in my head that we should actually make a real effort to go get a receiver in the draft. As opposed to sort of "always missing out" and just settling for best available in the third, sixth and seventh round. The other option is just not being afraid to pay two receivers. Because if you're not going to actively attack the position in the draft the next best option is to sign them when you do have them. Had we kept Cooper that number 2 receiver position wouldn't have been a problem either for the last few years. But we didn't. And I hope we ultimately resign Pickens as well, although I don't have any faith that we will.

Pickens is particularly interesting to me because I remember really wanting us to draft him at the time he was falling in the second round. Massive need met massive talent at the time. So it's a bit ironic that a few years later we are trading a third for the guy when in my head we should have gone out and got him in that draft at the time. That was the blinking light you go get in the draft. That's how you stop having to patch the #2 WR hole every single offseason.

So…are people excited, disgusted or DGAF?

I have left DGAF territory and I am headed towards excited.

We have a real life WR2 that could function as a WR1 depending on the competition. If the OL does what it is supposed to and especially if Prescott remains healthy, we should go at the ten wins or so where minus Pickens we were in the seven win range.

I think it's risky and could blow up. And for that reason I don't love giving up a third.

But I'm definitely intrigued if not excited. This is an Amari Cooper level acquisition and makes the team potentially significantly better.

I'm excited about Pickens. Dude is a really talented player. I'd be more excited if I didn't think this was just a one year rental but I think this could really make our passing offense dynamic this year. To bring in a guy that talented and only need him to be a #2 weapon is very exciting.

I'll probably be upset next offseason when we start talking draft and have no third round pick but right now I have a whole season before I have to think about that.

Even the second round has been failing to produce good players fairly steadily of late. For that position, especially lately, it's literally 1st round or bust.

Giving up a third in any draft hurts.

I do not buy the idea he balls out and signs a contract that nets a third. If that is the case, I would expect we had a good to great postseason with him a focal part of it.

Obviously this is good news. He's a proven talent who still had 900 yards in an offense with two limp wristed QB's where he was held on every route.

Pressure on the Offensive coaches, Pickens, and Dak to produce now. A real opportunity for Ferguson to step up into the high 70's catch territory and maybe 10 TD's. Another big opportunity for Tolbert to be a legit #3 and Turpin as an x-factor when shit isn't working.

Everything's changed since last year. We have RB's, WR's, OL and maybe even a healthy QB. Just gotta capitalize and not get too hurt.

If we had just one good fucking DT, we might even field a defense that can stop someone reliably for a change to add to it.

Regardless that won't help us next offseason when he walks, we have no third round pick and no second or third receiver (Tolbert is a free agent after this year too).
 
They think they have an elite QB and are doing things that teams do when they think they have an elite QB.

It is funny, kinda, if you hate yourself.

Excited to have two legit receivers again(Rip Cooper). I wouldn't let it stop me from resigning cooper or bringing in Allen as well. Really wish they had not given up a third or had negotiated an extension as part of the deal. Beyond that our defense on paper looks good and our OL should be great. The FO or Dak will find some way to screw it up.

Depends on if he leaves, what the season looked like, are we getting a comp pick for him, etc.
