Landry was definitely, and closely, involved. So many times he'd jump in a help directly coach the defense, especially during the extra days after Thanksgiving.

But to wholesale credit him with every and all innovations the defense employed, including defensive playcalls, in the mid-80's is borderline disrespectful to the assistant coaches and DC.

Such an underrated Cowboy.

He replaced Bob Breunig as a rookie in 1984, and technically started week one, though Breunig played a lot of downs.

Breunig was over the hill, and Landry should have sat him, frankly, as he flat out misread or reacted late way too often that year before finally going out with a back injury.

My first clear memories of Lockhart was as one of the heroes of that great comeback win vs New Orleans on MNF. I remember coming away from that game thinking of Lockhart and Jeffcoat as new stars and that the future was bright.

I was such an optimist! We had only just begun to suck, and had rock bottom to hit before Jimmy would come in and fix things. Under Jimmy, Lockhart became an All-Pro with over 200 tackles.

He was crazy good in Jimmy's system, but just not young enough to hang in for the real talent to arrive, especially after that brutal degree of contact.
