It has been a very long while since I've seen that Super Bowl. My opinion at the time was that the Cowboys didn't lose the game as much as they ran out of time.
Some context for the 1975 team -- Expectations for 1975 weren't high. The Cowboys missed the playoffs in 1974. Part of the reason why the Dirty Dozen happened in 1975 was that guys like Bob Lilly, Cornell Green, John Niland, Calvin Hill, Walt Garrison, and Bob Hayes left the team after the 1974 season.
1975 Cowboys finished as the 2nd best team in their division (behind the Cardinals) and were seen as the 4th best team in their conference. They had no business beating the Vikings in the playoffs, who were very strong that year. Fran Tarkington had been outstanding. The L.A. Rams were big favorites in the NFC Championship game. A win seemed quite unlikely and it was next to unthinkable that the Cowboys would blow out the Rams. That game was a thing of beauty. Landry did it with mirrors. It was pretty amazing.
