2026 Random Cowboys Stuff Thread...

I had to stay off the internet after the game, so I wouldn't be rage posting. But this was an inexplicable loss. Not going to bother going over everything because you guys have nailed it, but I will say this...

When a team suddenly and for no reason starts performing badly in-game, that's all on coaching. You have to fire the HC, DC whoever ...all of them. A defense can't be playing good for over a half, and then have one generic run that breaks for a TD destroy everything you were doing. It's not like they found some secret, they were literally handing the ball off.

How can an offense have drives that look like world beaters and then within 5 minutes they can't get out of their own way? What are some of these playcalls and protection schemes against obvious pressure?

It's coaching. You can fire him now Jerry or you can wait, but you can never trust a team coached like this. It's an embarrassment.

I still hate Garrett way more. But Schottenheimer might actually be a worse coach if that's even possible.

But if we waste 10 years on Schottenheimer my hatred might get there.

I know this a stupid discussion because it's basically cherry picking about which guy is worse at what, but I have nothing better to do this morning and I have to vent my anger some kind of way :lol.

They are both awful coaches who never before and never after would or will get a head coaching job outside of Dallas -- something both men achieved due only to the unique ownership of the organization.

I think Schotty is a better offensive coach than Garrett, but Garrett makes for a better HC.

Garrett proved time and time again that he had zero conceptual understanding of offensive football, which is exactly why he was terrible with the Giants when he got their OC job.

Schotty is average at best, but at least he's that -- average. He's not completely lost, but his conservative nature coupled with his ceiling as a coach makes it to where he'll never be anything more than average as an offensive mind.

Garrett is better as a HC because I think he at least knows what a championship team is supposed to look and smell like since he was fortunate enough to be on the Cowboys roster in the 90s. So he tried to emulate what he could (despite the unique circumstances of the circus) but just doesn't possess the natural ability to do so that a person has to possess to be good at something.

The best analogy I can come up with is that Garrett is like a a sous chef who was fortunate enough to spend years in some of the best kitchens in the industry but just didn't possess the natural ability to be a good cook himself.

He knew what methods and ingredients he needed to make the best meal, but when it came for him to do it himself, he simply couldn't.

Schotty literally has no clue whatsoever how to run a football team or what makes for a winner or what culture to establish nor what sort of methods to apply that are conducive to winning.

I think if you gave him 10 years, I think his record would be significantly worse than Garrett's and there is NO CHANCE any of his teams would go on the kinds of runs the 2014 and 2016 Cowboys went on under Garrett.

It's sad that we can even have this discussion and it's ownership malpractice that Jerry Jones has given the keys to Cowboys to either of these guys.

It's shameful.

I think sometimes now that we have some time between then and now people forget just how truly awful of a HC Garrett was.

Remember the 2011 Lions game when we were up 27-3 in the third quarter and Garrett still had us throw like 50 times, the Lions got 2 pick 6s (including from Bobby Carpenter) and came back and won?

How about the 2013 Packers game against Matt Freaking Flynn. We were winning at halftime 26-3. Murray had 7 yards a carry and over a hundred yards and Garrett inexplicably abandoned the run. We had the ball late in the 4th up 5 and continued to pass and threw a pick that wound up costing the game. Murray finished with 7 yards an attempt on just 18 carries.

And of course we could go on and on about Garrett's HC fuck ups.

Schottenheimer is a god awful HC but so was Garrett. I think they're probably about even in that regard.

Oh, I haven't forgotten at all.

But I think one is shit and the other is shittier, is all.

But it's sad that 2 of our last 3 HCs are guys that would never ever have HC on their resume if they didn't end up in Dallas.

Now that I've reminisced about some of Garrett's massive failures this (and the Baltimore game) were very much like Garrett losses.

Say what you will about McCarthy we didn't lose games like this during his tenure. Such a shame we had an at least decent coach for once and we didn't appreciate what we had.

I appreciate you saying this and accept your apology.

And Schottenheimer will never get 5 years let alone 10, I think he might very well be gone after this year. Garrett was in the family picture as a former well liked player on the title teams and his dad was a part of the FO for years, Schottenheimer had no history here before 2023.

There's a better chance that he's gone in two months than of him being here anywhere near as long as Garrett.

I just can't believe how many fans wanted to get rid of someone who won 12 games on 3 separate occasions under this version of Jerry Jones -- especially when you KNEW what types of coaches he would be looking at.

I never understood it.

Im glad McCarthy is gone. Shot wasn't the answer by far but Mike wasnt the ultimate answer. Sure we could be regular season champs every year but im not settling just because they aren't Shot or Garrett.

Well glad is the wrong word. Ok is probably better.

Yea the McCarthy love is hindsight after this horrific Schottenheimer hire.

I was ok with bringing McCarthy back but given the playoff performance in 2023 it was sort of clear that he should go. My mistake was thinking that they made one logical hire and that they were beyond these sorts of shenanigans, and would make another reasonable if unspectacular hire.

But here we are, which is why I'd be thrilled with Tomlin when grading on the Jerry scale, even if I'd only be lukewarm grading on a real scale.

Yeah but who exactly could win big with the way the Cowboys are run?

Not that Jimmy would have allowed him to, but how much would Jimmy have won if Jerry Jones operated those teams like he does these teams?

I get that you wanted a coach that made you feel like they could have postseason success, but we also have to remember that there are unique circumstances in Dallas that coaches have to overcome that you don't find anywhere else.

Is that an excuse to have the team looking as unprepared as Mike McCarthy did in that atrocious loss to Green Bay? No, but at least with McCarthy you felt like you had a shot.

Hell, if Dak played halfway decent vs the 49ers in 2022, we would have been in the NFCC.

I'll take those sorts of chances over what we've had to settle for going back to Fat Wade.

Until the Cowboys change how they conduct business, that is the absolute best we can hope for.

Shit, right now? I'd take Tomlin in a heartbeat.

The thing with him is I believe he would at least bring the right culture and mindset in the locker room and practice field. But he would desperately need good assistant coaches in order to succeed.

But this locker room is in desperate need of a hard-nosed, no-nonsense sort of HC, and Tomlin at least gives you that.

I'm still in shock how bad Schotty is utilizing the talent on offense.
Not that this is what you were saying... but to me, this is way bigger than schemes or gameday calls. The entire team is a complete mess, starting on Mondays. The team is completely unprepared during the week. The assistant coaches, especially on defense, stink. The players have no confidence in anything, maybe rightfully.

But then I've always believed schemes and gameday calls are overrated. To me head coaching is mostly about setting a tone, identifying who has talent and what that talent can and can't do, hiring a good staff, knowing when to kick their ass and when to back off, etc. It's a really complex puzzle, which is why so many fail.

Schotty is in way over his head, and the worst part is his DC is maybe even worse. This thing is a total trainwreck... and we don't even have our first rounder.

Other than that, I like where we are.

We just need a hard nosed head coach. You look at the Giants who are a far less talented team but they have a head coach who just knows how to prepare a team and win games.

I'm still in shock how bad Schotty is utilizing the talent on offense.

This Giants team reminds me in a lot of ways of our 2003 team with Parcells.

Amazing what happens when you get a great coach who knows what the hell he's doing from a football standpoint but also understands what sort of culture is required and how to implement it.
