2026 Random Cowboys Stuff Thread...

Yea I'm not really worried about ILB because Downs is going to be in the box probably 75% of the time.
But, he is still right. He didn't say we needed ILB badly, just more than EDGE.

We have enough competent edges, what we need is an elite edge. I’m not sure Sweat is the ace though, he might be the Gary level compliment.
We’re projecting Gary with better production given the scheme, but unlike Gary, Sweat actually did put together his best year in 2025. Basically the iron is hot with Sweat rn.

I don't think Seattle has an elite edge.

I think if we're not going to have an elite edge, multiple good edges is a decent substitute. But I don't think I trust any of our edges outside of Gary.

So I'd love to have another guy.

Yeah, I'd certainly take Sweat on the team. He doesn't have to be elite. You don't need one guy who stands out above the rest. You need multiple guys who can all win in one on one situations when fresh. And then rotate them through.

With that being said, I'm not giving up draft capital of significance. He doesn't move the needle enough for me to do that. Not to say Sweat isn't worthy of say a third round pick. I just don't think putting him in a platoon with 3 other guys justifies that type of draft capital.

Seattle is what we aspire to.

They are superior because they:

1) have an elite CB in the secondary,
2) Have two of the top 15 edges in pass-rush win rate. Coupled with Murphy at tackle. Mafe (19%) DLaw (14%) Murphy (9%). Each percentage represents a major difference, and top edges are 5% higher than DT's on average. Seattle sacked Maye six times in the Superbowl.
3) Have multiple suffocating, highly physical LB's with really good depth behind them

Dallas, who had 2 of the top 20 in win rate at DT (Williams (14%), Clark(8%)) has a good starting foundation, though depth at DT falls off rapidly.

But at the edge in 2025 we had Ezeiruaku (12.6%, 3rd among rookies) whom they are praying Parker's scheme can unleash along with Gary (11.9%) and Malachi (?). Potential, potential, potential, but not much actually proven given overall capital spent.

At LB Dallas has Overshown, who's a shade behind Seattle's top two guys and Winters, who's about as good as Seattle's depth guys. Of course there's higher potential with Barham, and I won't even count James, though the team likes him FWIW.

Dallas was terrible in the secondary, has overhauled their Safeties and nickel, but is relying on Revel and Moore to back a bounce-back season from Bland (109 QB rating allowed in 2025). REALLY stretching the Parker-Football-Guru angle, here.

Dallas is lacking a featured Edge and even if the Edge-by-committee is decent enough we have no stopper at CB.

Did you watch all of this yet? I don't have time now. He did say they've tried the last two years to not take anyone who doesn't really love football, party because SOM said so. Also I'm sure because of Mazi and Guyton.

Love that when on that subject the first name that came to his head was Lawrence, said he absolutely plays his ass off all the time.

Wish I could edit out the Broaddus stories letting us all know he was a scout at one time. :rolleyes

He is insisting that Loofah looks great in the new defense, has filled out, and really thinks he'll have new life. Guess we'll see.

I finally finished and it was really good. I didn't know if the guy would answer some of those questions, but he mostly did. I have to admit I thought he was a little douchey at first but maybe he's just not comfortable in interviews. About halfway through to the end he seemed to sort of loosen up and speak a little more freely.

Everyone should listen to this.

I think those picks combined with the Joseph and Williams picks definitely contributed to this new emphasis on leadership, character, etc.

They went off the reservation a bit with several of these high picks over a few years, and that includes the scouts and McClay.

I preferred the Barham discussion. Try him as a stack, if not, you still have perhaps a more focused Sam Williams.

Barham also played way more ILB in college than OLB, they only moved him last year to get their best players on the field, and even then he played a decent amount of ILB.

We'll see how Parker uses him and if he can make the Baun-style magic happen or not.

A few interesting points:

-Said our MIKE will play like Nakobe Dean (couldn't sign him of course), which to me means a lot of downhill attacking and blitzing. Even said that the scheme will protect the ILB's in coverage and they won't have too much to worry about there. That philosophy makes perfect sense with the kind of player Barham is, who is a monster coming downhill but struggles in space/coverage.
-Liked Woods but didn't think he was an ideal fit in the new scheme, some of us worried if he might be a fall back at 12 even at one point given the visit lists.
-Thinks Osa could still be a good player in this scheme (duh) and even wondered aloud if they "could've moved some money around or something" to keep him.
-Thinks Overton can stand up in some situations, obviously will primarily be a 4i/3T. I don't believe that he can actually stand up more than as a gimmick, but hey.
-I wonder if they're thinking of Liufau in the same vein as Barham, kind of a Baun-type tweener who moves around.
-Said they thought Anthony Hill played better in 2024 than 2025, so they probably weren't as high on him as some assumed.
-Said the scouts each have about 5-6 teams where they have contacts and they kind of informally prod on potential trade opportunities. I always assumed McClay and the such are doing that stuff but it's interesting that they have individual scouts kind of playing around with who they know on other teams.
