If he doesn’t, oh well. If we are truly going with open competition, then earn your spot.

Would you prefer we give him a roster spot, keep him inactive all year, do it again next year then cut him? Because he was a 4th rounder? Sometimes draft day mistakes happen. A player just doesn’t live up to what you thought they had. If he isn’t ready to genuinely deserve a spot this year, then try to get him on the PS. If someone takes him, so be it. Move on with the players that can help you now.

I won’t lose any sleep over it.

The thing is you knew that when you drafted him. This isn't some shock. You drafted him because you liked the developmental upside. I'm no fan of drafting projects in the fourth round. But I have to think the Cowboys drafted him with the knowledge he was a year away. Unfortunately with the NFL and Olineman you have to do that because the lack of quality ones coming from the college ranks.

So the question is, do you save a roster spot to develop a guy. Or do you basically say, it's all about this year and we don't care about down the road. There is some projection involved in the NFL. It's not only about what you can do for me today.

I don’t agree with that. Sure, you can think he was a project like you say. But I would think they would think he’d be far enough along to at least be at the end of the depth chart. But for whatever reason… mental, physical or both he isn’t there right now. And watching film on the guy won’t show it like working side by side for a couple months will.

I mean I didn't want the guy in the first place, so I hate to sit on the other side of the fence on this. But my guess is he isn't worse than any other LT scrub that will be cut in the next few days. We've seen 2 preseason games. I feel like we probably need to see a project through a little further than that. Again it's not all about who you'd want on the field week one. When you're talking about the 53rd man on your roster some of it is about a long term projection.

Don't worry, I'm sure Shelton will be ready to contribute in 4 years like Mingo.

Oh I personally think he probably ends up like Chaz Green did. Great feet, he can play LT, he is just raw and kind of passive. And then we hold, hold and hold. And eventually when we are forced to play him he gets absolutely annihilated. That's my honest guess. That or he is just like Waletzko, Ball and Richards. Hangs around, never plays and a few years in we dump him.

My honest assessment in watching Shelton and his Seahawks game. Which he played at RT, Thomas was in at LT. He is frustrating to watch. He moves really well. But then he just lacks aggressiveness in what he is doing. It's like he will almost get into the right position and then his feet just stop moving. I watched every snap from that game, nothing was particularly bad or awful. Nothing was particularly great. You kind of watch him and you can see where he almost could do great things. But then he doesn't. I sort of just wonder if he doesn't have the right temperament. He doesn't play with that angry and aggressive edge you need.

I think he has enough potential that it's worth waiting and seeing. Especially someone like him who will likely really benefit from a year of professional strength training.
 
The other thing about Shelton is that I don't really see another depth Tackle on the team that I'd be upset if they picked him over.

Exactly. What gives me hope is he's near the ball, but not quite yet making plays on it. You can develop that adjustment to the pro game in time, but being in position is where it starts.
 
Brain Urlacher brought up a good point from a last season. If the offense was so good, wtf was it held to 17-24 points or whatever so many times in losses.

The Rams had the top ranked offense and scored 24 or less 5 times, we did it 7 times, seems kind of a pointless comment.

First of all that's a stupid number to take. The league average is 23 points per game last year. So you're literally saying an average NFL performance in a few losses is bad. That seems a bit extreme.

Urlacher is an endlessly disappointed Cowboys fan just like us

Of course he's going to make an unreasonable complaint

A real complaint would be if the offense was being held to 17 points or less in games where the defense played well. That's the baseline for what an offense should score when given their chances.

If the defense is giving the offense the ball back with decent field position and with the lead or at least within one score, A team as talented as Dallas should be scoring at least 24 if not much more. Otherwise, you become one-dimensional and it's a lot harder.

Russell Wilson, for example, got endless chances handed to him because his defense kept stopping the other team no matter how many interceptions he threw.
