What about injury? This is a guy who has to put on a walking boot just to go fishing.

Good, all tea leaves and pie are aligning.

I'm not even excited about it. Not sure how it changes anything other than making them even more chinchy signing anyone of note. After they dole out these big contracts, you know they're going to be sick.

Why would he be a fool? Most top QBs sign before their contract is up and don't actually hit the market.

Why would Dak be a fool to do what almost every other top QB does and re-sign prior to free agency?

And yes, one of the sides is stupid and both sides are greedy.

Most QBs in their prime don't make it to free agency because they're tagged. Dak is less than a year away from a rare opportunity for a top 10'ish qb.

It's actually fairly rare for a QB to get tagged.

Three teams have applied the exclusive franchise tag to quarterbacks since 2012, with the Saints' Drew Brees in 2012, Redskins' Kirk Cousins in 2017 and Cowboys' Dak Prescott in 2020 all being locked in by their teams to exclusive negotiating rights.

You do have a point that the threat of the tag is there, though.

If Dak is determined to hit free agency (I don't actually think he is, but at least hypothetically), we'd be monumentally stupid to not move heaven and earth to trade him now.

You'd effectively be tanking the season, pissing off a lot of season ticket holders. Jerry would rather lose Dak in free agency than do that.

But if we lose him for nothing in free agency, we might be forced to tank multiple seasons. And then season ticket holders would be even more pissed.

I'd rather sacrifice a season and get multiple firsts for him.

Run with Lance and see what happens. Some fans might be intrigued by that.

I think the ground work for the shit happening now was laid by the first contract go around with Dak. They fucked that negotiation up so bad that he was basically able to get killer terms coming to the end of this deal. Basically they fucked his contract negotiations up a long time ago.

And it's all because they kept wanting him to "prove more" and nothing has really changed.

It's probably too late for that. Every team at this point is pretty much set at QB. Even if a playoff worthy team lost their starter early on, they'd probably prefer to tank the season than fork over two firsts for Dak and pay him a king's ransom.

All depends on the situation. If their QB situation is uncertain going into 2025 and their starter got hurt, I could see it happening. But we should have done it months ago.

Yep. There are several teams who are "set" but would jump at a chance for a guy like Dak. "Set" and "SET" are two different things.
