He is not their future. They do have protections, but damn, that seems like a dumb contract. I'll have to see the details of the contract structure to fully comment on it.

So basically if he isn't their starting QB then they have to cut him after this year?
 
Maybe that was his stipulation. Helped create cap room but if he isn’t their starter after this year they won’t keep him from free agency.

That would be my guess. Either cut me or I'm your starter and pay me like a starter.

They didn’t give him that. The “extension” was nothing but a cap manipulation move. All of the big money years are voidable, and will be, so the numbers literally mean nothing beyond 2021.
