What do you think about TE?

We'd all prefer to bring Schultz back, but there's a very decent chance he's priced himself out.

I don't know if he'll be super expensive. His numbers have come back to the pack, where he's top 7 or 8, but not top 5. Cut Jarwin and give his money to Schultz and we might be in a good spot to resign him.

He's been fantastic.

Yea he's a strange one, I think most people realize that his production is mostly just a function of the threat of our other offensive weapons but if you look at the contracts given out to Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith by the Pats last year (12.5/year) and their statistical production, there's a strong argument that Schultz's floor is that yearly average.

But on the other hand it's pretty obvious that he's nowhere near as dynamic as guys like Kittle, Andrews and Kelce who are only making like 14/year, or even Goedert who is making just north of 14/year, but Schultz's statistical production is close enough to Goedert's that I'm sure his agent will push for that salary range.

For me, I wouldn't go any higher than about 10, maybe 11/year on him, but once you start talking 12-14/year I think it's just too much. You're paying him like a top 4-5 TE in the league at that point and I don't think that's what he is, nor is it good value on a roster where we have to be judicious with who we're paying now that Dak is on a big deal.

There's also a bunch of other FA options at TE who I think could come in and give similar production for probably half the price with guys like Evan Engram, Tyler Conklin, Gerald Everett, OJ Howard, and Maxx Williams. There's some injury risk with a few of those guys but I'd much rather roll the dice on them at 5/year than Schultz at 13/year. I also personally think Gesicki is a better TE than Schultz, so there's an outside chance that he tops the market and then Schultz is kind of left with the leftovers and we're able to get him back for a bit under market value.

This is also a strong TE class in the draft in the 2-4 range, there aren't any Pitts or Hockensons in the first but there are a number of guys who we could get in that 2-4 range who I think could pretty comfortably replace Schultz by their 2nd season.

The other complicating factor is the Gallup situation. By most measures we can only afford to keep one, and Gallup is pretty clearly the more talented player but his market may be depressed given that his stats are down with the injury. If the choice is Gallup at 10/year or Schultz at 13, I'll be taking Gallup.

What would you be comfortable with on a yearly average for him?

And how about Gallup?

Comfortable? 10 or so for both, but I'd be willing to go a little higher, probably 12 max. Make it like 4 years and backload into the higher cap years coming up and you can get both back at a cap healthy first year number.

The caveat is that I'd be willing to move on from both if they are adequately replaced by similar or better quality players for cheaper.

The other caveat of course is Gregory, who should be priority one. They can do all of this if they want to.

So I love Gallup but if the cost isn't right I think I'm changing things up a bit with the third WR. I kind of want a dude with some more explosiveness in that spot. A little more speed and a little more of that quick twitch separation. Nothing against Gallup, I think he is a great #2 WR. But we have 3 WRs that are similar in a lot of ways. I think our offense could benefit from a little more pure speed and quickness in the group.

So if Gallup and Schultz can both be had for 11/year, who would either of you keep?

Gregory is clearly priority number 1 no matter what, but the tradeoff between Gallup/Schultz is fascinating to me.

I can't see any scenario where Gallup gets more than Schultz, so if you would keep Schultz if the salaries are equal, how much lower would Gallup's have to be to keep him instead?

I'd take both at 11, but if it came down to one or the other I'd take Schultz. It's just simply #1 TE versus #3 WR.

I'd probable want Gallup in the 6-7 mil range. If not I have to think about going a cheaper route and a rookie contract there to save money. If we didn't have Ceedee, Cooper and Schultz though, that may be different.

This is especially good stuff. Well done.

I think it has been drilled into him not to run. I hope they can reverse that when is do or die time.

Elliott literally said yesterday that they weren't doing as much RPO/QB keeper stuff because they're protecting Dak.

Which is fine given how this season has gone, but the bubble wrap has to come off come playoff time. I think he has it in him because we've seen him run aggressively on occasion this year (Falcons TD, 3rd and long late in the game against the Patriots) but we'll see.

The FA safety class next year is extremely strong so I think we should be able to bring back any (or all) of Kearse/Kazee/Hooker very cheap.

Like 3-4/year for Kearse and 1-2/year for Kazee and Hooker.
hope we finally draft a good one.

I wonder what Gallup will really get. Outside of Golladay no free agent WRs last year really got big money. Corey Davis got what like 12.5? Otherwise basically every other free agent WR was counting under 10 mil on the cap in 2021 after free agency. And I don't think Corey Davis or Golladay has either team thinking it was money well spent at this point. I think the NFL WR market is starting to come down. NFL teams are realizing that the money isn't necessarily worth it.

Gallup coming off a sub 600 yard season may not garner as much money as some of us think. And if he does good for him, I'm going to go into the draft and find someone. We have the luxury of working a rookie in as the third WR because Ceedee and Cooper are so good and will get the defensive attention.

Yeah and I get it. The guy is coming back from a devastating injury and we are sitting at 10-4 without needing his legs. So I have no problem with that. But ultimately when it's win or go home I hope they are able to flip the switch back on. Because sometimes when you get so used to doing things a certain way, it's hard to just flip it and say, ok now go do what your instincts tell you and run sometimes.

Good point, I get the feeling Dak will jump back on that bike as the stakes are raised. But this will be theme going forward throughout the rest of his career.
