The best way to put it is the defense didn't help Byron get any picks and Byron didn't help the defense get any either.

Sometimes players are who they are. Some are ballhawks, and some are Byron Jones.

I think that's absolutely true. And guys with no ball skills sometimes get 2 or 3 picks because of scheme. But it doesn't mean they have ball skills. Byron is just that. A guy with zero balls skills who was also in a defense not conducive to getting freebie picks.

and yet, no one can gloss over or diminish the fact that once Richard moved him to his rightful position, Byron redeemed what was at that point a very disappointing high draft pick and an average player as a safety.

Yeah he was a borderline bust before he moved to corner. Richard made the dude a lot of money.

"Just"?

Sure, just use yet another premium draft resource on the receiver position while you continue to ignore your defense.

The 1st rounder and huge money for Cooper, the 3rd rounder for Gallup, and $5 million a year for Cobb just isn't enough.

"Just" make the same mistakes over and over again.

:doh

You take the best player available. Given the depth at WR, the likelihood of one being there is very high compared to other positions. So unless there is a defensive player of equal or similar value, take the WR.

And given that same 'depth' you're speaking if, the likelihood of one being there much later is also very high. Based on your own statement about that depth. I guarantee that there will be one 'defensive player' as valuable or more valuable than a receiver in every round. Simple math tells us so.

I don't think thats necessarily true given the depth at reciever and that you're talking 7 rounds. In one given round the odds may be in your favor but not for 7 rounds.

If youre comparing the one position (WR) to the collective 5 included on 'defense', yes. I would think there would be comparable draft value in such a lopsided comparison.

If all talent is equal in a draft. Based on 6 positions. There is only a 27% chance defense is better than wr over 7 rounds. That ignores what most consider is the most talented WR class in a long time.

Think of it this way.

You're talking about one position - receiver. Versus how many 'defensive positions'? Five? Defensive end, defensive tackle, linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties. The Cowboys can't rule out any of them.

That's my point.

Again, I did the math above. And that's assuming WR is equally talented to all defensive positions.

I don't know where you came up with that number.

(5/6) to the 7th power. Same concept as saying your odds of flipping a coin 7 times and expect it to be heads all 7 times. Each flip is 50% but when you figure it over 7 rounds your odds of getting the same result all 7 times diminish.

Respectfully, I don't think that calculation applies to this situation.

It does if you say statistically defense is likely to be more talented than WR every round of the draft. Just saying that's not statistically accurate. Obviously there are lots of other factors to take into consideration that aren't included in that. Such as position depth and what other NFL teams do. It's obviously not totally random like we have assume in a calculation like that.

I'm all for defense heavy in this draft. I don't even care much about TE. I just can't ignore BPA entirely.

And? There are 7 rounds in a draft, where the depth at the WR position - this year - is very robust compared to other years, so it’s more likely that one will find a better prospect at WR than defense. And, you can’t use the “all defensive players”against the WR position because it doesn’t make sense. That would only be appropriate if you compared it against all offensive players. Even then, it’s lazy analysis.

thats a big 'if'
