I don't think that would necessarily make it a bad draft. That was 5 years ago, everyone will be on second contracts. It's not really McClays fault that Byron Jones is too expensive for example.

Chaz Green and Randy Gregory are the whiffs that really hurt that draft. Mostly Gregory because of weed. He was pretty good when he played.
The Joneses put all the pressure in that draft by drafting Gregory knowing he was a pothead and emotionally disturbed ahead of time. That kind of risk always has repercussions.

First round they got their value, but they really blew the second round, and you know it was Jerry behind it wanting Gregory to wear 94 on his jersey ffs.

You can afford to miss on either your 2nd or your third, but when they took a wild gamble on Gregory they put all the pressure on their 3rd rounder to save the draft.

If you just go sure and steady, you’ll hit one or both.

Yeah I just don't see the value. What's his role, fourth or fifth WR? Is he going to play special teams? Use him in goal line situations only?

I have serious doubt about his speed and explosiveness still being there and I don't think he has ever been a crafty and technically sound WR. Just draft one, makes way more sense.

Exactly. Just use a Day 2 pick on a guy like Tyler Johnson or Michael Pittman, Jr. and be done with it.

"Just"?

Sure, just use yet another premium draft resource on the receiver position while you continue to ignore your defense.

The 1st rounder and huge money for Cooper, the 3rd rounder for Gallup, and $5 million a year for Cobb just isn't enough.

"Just" make the same mistakes over and over again.

:doh

The only part of that which is expensive is Cooper. But yeah I wouldn't want a second round reciever unless Cooper is franchised or Cobb is gone. Even then it would be a little painful. Third, eh if I get a stud I take the reciever and let the chips fall down the road where they will. Get the talent and make it work later. It's too hard to find talent in the third and later to also care about need.

You've got a great starting combo in Gallup/Cooper.

In an ideal world ignoring the talent available I want a DT and Safety in the first two rounds.

From my own 'reading the tea leaves', it feels like it will be a corner in the first round. I think Jones is a goner and sadly I don't see us in range for one of the top defensive tackles. It could be a safety if McKinney is still there, but it will mark a huge philosophical change to see them do it. But lining it up myself, it feels like a corner to me. Trevon Diggs intrigues me.

And then I expect some sort of a double dip at defensive tackle, either in free agency, the draft or a combination of both, but I think they need at least two new defensive tackles.

And likely another cornerback as well, as even Lewis and Awuzie are free agents after this year. The position needs to be restocked.

I really hope you're wrong. I just don't think any of the cbs(after Okudah of course) are worth a 1st

There seems to be a push by the media that the TCU DT will go in the first but if I think I like the second round DTs just as much. There are 3 safeties I really like. 2 of which I think would be perfect at 17.

The corners after Okudah look like the same as the second/third round corners to me. I want nothing to do with one at 17.

That's cool, I can handle the disagreement. I wouldn't expect everybody to feel the way I do. I like Diggs there and I feel he has all of the tools needed to be successful and just needs continued coaching and experience.

It does feel like my opinion is in the minority on that. But I think Diggs has the tools to be a really good one and a playmaker that we need back there. I think he needs continued coaching and more experience to become more consistent.

I like one of the safeties at #17 and the name is not Delpit.

Yeah some of it you have to look abyear down the road. DT for example even if we sign a guy is will orobably be a bargain bin move on a one or two year deal. Leaving the same problem next year. So I'd be all for two DTs in the draft even if we sign a guy.

Sadly we do need numbers at corner. I really like Lewis in the new defense but we just need numbers there. Probably another position we should take a couple. Just please not in the first round. I'm sure you're right but looking at the first round corners I just don't see much difference between Diggs and the other corners down the list.

Here is Kipers CB rankings for example:

Cornerbacks
1. *Jeff Okudah, Ohio State
2. *CJ Henderson, Florida
3. *Noah Igbinoghene, Auburn
4. *Jaylon Johnson, Utah
5. Kristian Fulton, LSU
6. Trevon Diggs, Alabama
7. Jeff Gladney, TCU
8. *Cameron Dantzler, Mississippi State
9. Troy Pride Jr., Notre Dame
10. *A.J. Terrell, Clemson

I personally like Troy Pride just as much as I like the guys near the top. Diggs may be the second corner taken but there is clearly no consensus. Henderson is interesting but it seems like Florida corners have been highly overrated as of late.

I also really like Dantzler but to me again it's second round. It's sort of a preference thing at this point because there are a lot of corners ranked similarly and that's why you see so many different opinions after Okudah. We will take a corner at some point. But give me Dantzler and put him with Lewis and Chido and I think you have a nice top 3 corners.

I've seen flashes of brilliance from Diggs that I haven't with some others. Having said that, I agree with you that rounds 2 is the sweet spot for corners, I just worry that there might be a run and we miss out.

But yeah, my overall opinion is that we need at least two corners and two defensive tackles added.

I like Dantzler too, but second round as you said. Given our numerous needs, a trade down to add picks would not surprise me at all.

Take Delpit/McKinney at 23 with a slight move back. Use the 3rd you get in that trade to move up in the second to take Jalen Reagor.

No way I'm moving up for any receivers in the draft. Too many good ones to be doing that.

I agree on McKinney/Delpit. I think Delpit is going to drop to the late first and be an annual probowler for one of these already loaded playoff teams. Annoys me a lot and its why the great teams stay great.

I get that line of thinking. I just think that Reagor has been vastly underrated.
