2017 Mock Drafts

Adam Shaheen is my pet cat at TE for later rounds.

I've seen some who think he could be the third TE and a second round pick.

Something tells me Jake Butt is going to be right up Dallas's alley though. An all around type TE who can block and has reliable hands and oh yeah, he happens to be coming off an ACL tear and Dallas has the luxury of not needing him probably for another year. It's like Jerry's go to move. I just hope he can hold off until the fourth round.

Yeah, I'm not drafting a project from some shit hole college in Ashland, KY in the second.

I agree with Butt. He's right up our alley for this year's injury pick.

I even saw Butt getting Witten comparisons.

My understanding with Shaheen is that he is going to blow up at the dork olympics with some killer numbers. We will have to wait and see though because if he doesn't he may be available later. He was like the best Division II TE ever statistically. But then again, he was a Division II TE. It's not like I've ever watched him play. But at 6'6" 277 pounds if he can run, you know he will get people excited.

It is unlikely that Howard or Njoku make it to us. If they did, I would consider it, they are both very explosive.

I'd consider either under the right circumstances. But in this case I'd take Corey Davis over Njoku.

Njoku is raw, drops the ball too much, can't block. Makes me nervous in the first round. Does he give you that much more then say Evan Engram later in the draft? Hell I can't believe how little love Jordan Leggett gets either. I thought he looked stellar in the National Championship against that Alabama defense and all their talent.

I love Engram, he isn't a great blocker either but he gives effort and he has the movement skills of a WR, would love him in the 2nd.

Leggett would be money in the 3rd or 4th.

It's really a pretty awesome TE class. Gerald Everett is another one of those WR skill set kind of guys who is a questionable blocker.

Dez is as big as Engram. How the fuck would he play TE in our scheme?

236 pounds? That's what Engram weighed in at the Senior Bowl. I'm guessing he will probably add another 10 pounds in the NFL and be a 245 pound TE.

It is, although it would be like us to unnecessarily spend 2nd rounders on TE's for years then ignore the position in one of the strongest classes in a decade with Witten on the cusp of retirement.

I would be fine with Butt in the 3rd for what it's worth, he tore his ACL in January, he could conceivably be ready to contribute in some form or fashion by October or November. If healthy he'd be a solid top 50ish prospect, so taking him at 90 or where ever we pick in the 3rd would be fine. Don't think he's had any other serious injuries either.

Taking him at 60, which is right around where I think he'd go if healthy, would not be fine.

The injury doesn't bother me that much only because we don't really need him as a rookie. We can bring him along slowly from the injury. We have Witten for at least one more year, Swaim looked like a solid #2 TE type, Hanna should be coming back who is a good #2 TE and maybe Gathers will show us something as well (Supposedly looked awesome working with Romo).

A TE pick for the Cowboys is more about 2018 and beyond and less about 2017 anyway.

As far as Butt goes, I agree, although I think a guy like Njoku, Engram, Howard, Everett, etc. could have a big impact in 2017 as far as providing a vertical threat up the seam that Witten hasn't been for probably 3 years.

They could, assuming our coaches actually use them. Which I have my doubts about. We really suck at using our second TE and I'm not sure the coaches would start phasing Witten out at all. I don't think we want to pull Beasley off the field much either although we do run plenty of packages with 2 WRs or less.

Seemed like Swaim was starting to get a lot of snaps this past season. I don't remember what game he got hurt but he was on offense on 19% of the snaps.

Yeah but mostly for his ability to block. For the 9 games he played in he still only had 8 targets. Which he did well on by catching 6 of those passes for 11.5 yards per catch.

I still think Hanna or Swaim is going to be our preferred mode for a blocking TE next year no matter who we draft.

I agree. Both with taking him, and that he'll be ready to contribute this next season. Depending on who falls, I'd be perfectly happy with Butt with our 3rd.

236 and 227 lb TE's won't get it done in a scheme where being a good blocker is mandatory.

And if players like Engram bulk up from 216 to 236 or even higher to 245, how much of what made them special in college is taken away by added bulk?

Engram was already at 236 at the Senior Bowl and still looked extremely explosive.
