The hard thing is NFL teams will make some wacky picks. Some team may really love Robinsons, Austin, Gray, Melton Austin, Velus Jones and they pick one of those guys higher than expected. Suddenly that pushes other guys down to us at WRs.

But I'm starting to look at that sort of third tier of guys for people that intrigue me. Romeo Doubs for example, Tyquan Thornton, Danny Gray, and Justyn Ross. There are some guys with speed and route running that I could see the Cowboys liking that may not be on our radar as casual fans. The guys I listed for example all have exceptional speed outside of Ross. And Ross is one of those 6'4" guys who looked destined to be a top pick at Clemson before injuries and the QB situation sort of side tracked his career. And I like David Bell still too. I've always liked him but I worry that one of these guys is our solution to an immediate desperate need for a top 3 WR. But if the chips fall where WR isn't right for a guy like Pickens, Dotson, or Watson then maybe we have to go get another guy in free agency to buy us time until Gallup is up to speed and one of these rookies can develop a little.

I don't think the Cowboys will be interested in one of these 5'7" or 5'8" WRs so I'm hoping some team falls in love with Calvin Austin or Wan'Dale Robinson and pushes them above some of the normal sized humans. Not to be confused with Kevin Austin who is a 6'2" WR with speed that I think the Cowboys could really like in the later portions of the draft.

It's funny. The Georgia defense was absolutely stacked with amazing talent. And now everyone seems to be picking apart every one of their players. Walker didn't show any pass rush, Jordan Davis isn't powerful, Dean is too small and slow. Wyatt apparently has domestic abuse in his past. I guess you could say Walker is climbing now. Same thing with Tindall. Cine as well.

Just so many guys who will go top two rounds. And yet the top guys are sort of being picked apart. By the way, I don't necessarily agree with this analysis on Davis. I think he is powerful.

Not great. But that's sort of why I'd be hunting in the first two rounds. Or possibly trade up in the third for one. By pick 88 I think it could sort of get thin. But I can imagine you can package 88 and one of the fifths (Maybe another pick) to move up pretty far in the round. I guess you just have to sort of see how things fall.

The fun part about the draft is there will be players that go way higher than they should over players that we all think are better. It happens every year. Dudes go in the second or third round that most of us look at and go wow, I thought he was a sixth or seventh round player. But that team loves the player and maybe just fits what they want. Not everyone wants a big receiver. Not everyone wants a 5'8" jitter bug. There are certain flavors to things like WR that will have teams picking guys higher than you would have thought or passing on guys you think should go higher.

I think Ezukanma is going to higher than I initially expected. I was thinking at the earliest 4th round, but more likely 5th, and now I'm thinking he could go as high as the 3rd.

Yeah I mean 22 is sort of your normal 4 year college guy. 23 is normal for a guy who used up all his college eligibility. 24 well those are usually a little rare.

But 23 years old doesn't change my mind at all on a player. It really seems to be more about the wear and tear on a players body. So you have a guy 5 years on the cheap and is 28 when you make a decision. Of course if I'm signing that extension I would prefer a 26 year old.

24 is pushing it for me. But I'm not a Wyatt fan anyway.

He could but he could also go sixth and I wouldn't bat an eye. I don't love the player. David Bell is another guy I could see surprise some in the third round or drop to the sixth because of his slow times. Velus Jones is another WR I could see going all over the place. He is a returner, he has elite speed and finally made an impact at receiver this past year. Some team could look at him and think, he can take the top off and I can get him in space and he will be a weapon. But other teams may look at him and think that he isn't a good enough or polished enough pure receiver.

I'm also intrigued about the two midgets. I could see a team like the Chiefs or 49ers or Cardinals looking at Robinson or Austin and thinking that these are real weapons for them. But other teams will look at a 5'7"-5'8" WR and see a guy who is really limited in his role. All depends on the offensive staff and what they want to do. I think those guys would be stupid in Dallas for example.

The premise that we need a Pro Bowl WR (and insinuation that if we want a suitable WR we need to take them high) is completely flawed and frankly fucking stupid, which is no surprise coming from a know-nothing like Mosher.

People (including myself) are somewhat down on Lamb but he's also 23 and coming off a 1100 yard season. Gallup is another 1000 yard-type WR, and while he'll be out a month or whatever, you don't make decisions based on such a short time-frame.

Why do we need a Pro Bowl WR?

All we really need is a Cedrick Wilson type, especially in an offense that should be more run-oriented than anything. There's a laundry list of guys taken in the 4th-5th range who would be perfectly suitable behind Lamb/Gallup.

I'm fine taking a guy even as high as the 2nd but this obsession some fans have with WR's fueled by morons like Mosher who slurp up Jerry's self-aggrandizing, promoting, skill-position fascination bullshit is disgusting.

We don't need a probowl WR, but we need a guy who is ready to start from day one.

I think the bigger picture that he is pointing out is simply to dispell the notion that it's easy to get stud WRs later in the draft. It isn't. And right now we don't really have a true number 1 WR, but maybe we don't need that. Or maybe Lamb becomes that guy.

And the offense should be more run oriented. I'm just not sure how we get there with Zeke as the ball hog at RB.

It's easier to fill in around a true number one WR with lesser talents. When you lack that, you kind of have to compensate with multiple really good players so that you can just pick the matchup you like best.
 
I hope we draft Smoke Monday for the name alone.

And some of the logic behind cutting Cooper was to allow Lamb/Gallup space to flourish. Flawed as that logic may be, it's clear that they think Lamb is a number 1 WR type. I think he can be, he isn't really there yet, but it's certainly close enough that I'm willing to forego spending yet another 1st on a WR (3 out of 4 years if we take one this draft).

To your point about a "stud" WR, there is no real need for that in my opinion. Give me a Cedrick Wilson type and I'm perfectly fine rolling with that, along with Schultz who is presumably now a top 5-8ish TE.

The passing game over the first month or so may be frustrating until Gallup is back but that's why you have coaches. A legit coaching staff could easily find a way to work around not having Gallup for a few weeks.

This is true. But I'm also a bit pessimistic on how quickly Gallup will be back up to speed. Part of me wonders with the injury and excessive swelling and slow recovery time lines, that he may not have the usual burst back until 2023.

It was a stupid plan from the start to let Cooper go and roll with Gallup. I like Gallup as a 2nd/third receiver but the guy had a pretty bad injury in January that he has struggled to recover from up to this point. Cooper on the other hand would have been ready to roll week one. This would be a totally different conversation if we had Cooper instead of Gallup and the injury.
 
Also I don't know if a coaching staff would necessarily be able to work around Washington and Brown as your 2 and 3 receivers for a quarter of the season. But presumably we will be adding something to the WR corp better than them. Which shouldn't be too difficult because both guys kind if suck.

He actually feels a bit like a Quinn type of player. Long and athletic safety who likes to hit. Definite day 3 guy who would fit what Quinn likes.
